Thread: VAR

    VAR

Apparently an 8 minute delay today for an offside Bournemouth v Wolves. Crazy it's ruining the game.

    Re: VAR

Semi-automated offside in play as well, apparently it was broken. They checked two handballs, then realized the semi-automated offside wasn't working and finally ruled it out for offside. Shambles.

    Re: VAR

Heard on radio this morning Arsene Wenger proposing changes to the offside law., Hes proposing the whole body needs to be in front of defender to be offside. Cant continue with these toe nail or halfway up the arm offside by a centimetre decisions, its absolutely pathetic. The rule needs modernising.

    Re: VAR

Give the VAR team 3 angles in real time and 30 seconds to make a decision.

If they cant say definitively off or on then its not a clear and obvious error and the on field decision stands.

    Far too sensible.

Unless we have semi-automated technology to tell if there's a sliver of light between players, I have never really seen how this helps. Just moves the decision from a toenail to the other bit of the player that is closest to the other player surely?

I thought VAR was only for "cear and obvious errors".
If it takes more than a minute to review, it's neither clear nor obvious.

But you'll still get some of these decisions, as what if someone's toenail is playing him onside? You're just moving the point where the decision needs to be made. The offside rule wasn't intended to be this black and white, God I hate VAR.

Obviously, it was never, ever going to do that. For a start, what is clear and obvious? It means different things to different people.

I think it should be measured only from the boots of the players. Put a sensor in the heal or toe of each boot and, using the new semi-auto technology, decide if someone is on or off from that.

    Re: VAR

call me old fashioned, but i reckon that it should be left to the linesperson and the referee, if they get it wrong then so be it. The amount of abuse officials get since the advent of social media, 101 camera angles, hours and hours of bullshit from fans that isn't contained to the home or the pub, workplace etc. It's alright to say that you think that the officials got something wrong, to insult them and abuse them isn't, and that's one of the reasons why we're seeing things like VAR. Moan by all means, but take it for what it is and understand that officials getting things wrong is just part of the game we love. People grizzle too much these days, get on with it. Old bastard rant over

    Re: VAR

Personally, as a neutral more than anything, VAR and how its currently used seems to have been to the detriment to my casual viewing of the sport compared to others that have adopted technology to assist with refereeing decisions. It needs to be much more prescribed and time limited. There needs also to be an acceptance from supporters/viewers that theres still going to be mistakes.

Im starting to feel theres just something about football that makes it difficult to introduce this without it detracting from what makes the game what it is. Without this sounding stupid, I think its how important and relatively rare goals are as a scoring measure compared to other sports (cricket, tennis, rugby, etc). Now, theres an argument there of course that is exactly why VAR is needed, but the unintended consequence is the need to unturn as many stones as possible to rule a goal out and that rush of emotion, back of the net feeling, is being slowly diminished as a result.

Agreed but the game is about goal la and to see some of these goals disallowed for a fraction of a toe or a sleeve is, in my mind, ridiculous.

I mean 8 minutes. Thats absurd. Its almost like they are looking for any excuse to disallow goals.

I agree, they already have tracking devices in those bra tops they wear so use those

Absolutely! If VAR can't sort a decision in 30 seconds or less, it's the referees call end of.

I nowhere near a fan of it but that Millwall ‘keeper may have stayed on the pitch after his flying karate kick yesterday. Although even VAR may have been caught cold expecting the ref to make the red card decision immediately.

That was a shocking decision by Michael Oliver. He has a clear view and shouldn't have needed VAR to bail him out
