    Palace/Millwall game

Brutal assault on Palace striker by Millwall keeper. Almost as bad as Schumacher on Battiston in 82 World Cup.

I've only seen it once clearly a red but I thought really clumsy and certainly not near Schumachers challenge.

Yeah ok seen it again. It's worse than clumsy.

Mateta is undergoing surgery on his ear atm

Palace chairman Steve Parish told BBC One at half-time: "So far, what we know is he [Mateta] has a bad gash behind his ear. He's obviously at the hospital.

Millwall fans followed the challenge/assault with chants of "let him die" and are being investigated for homophobic chanting against Ben Chilwell. There was also fighting before the game started.

The new era of football, I suppose.
Chants of "Let him die" echoed around stadiums throughout the country back in the day.

one thing doing it when someone's getting a sponge on their leg whilst they have a breather, it's another thing when the guy's been kicked in the head and is surrounded by medics

I get what you're saying, but honestly, in the 70s & 80s in particular, as soon as the physio ran onto the pitch that's what they chanted.

Another point is that the ref didn't take action until VAR called him over, suggesting that despite having a clear vision of the incident, he thought it was a reasonable challenge.

It was Michael Oliver, widely regarded as the best of the English referees of the last decade or so, who was in charge wasn't it? He's slipped from his usual high standards a bit this season - I don't think it was deliberate by the Millwall keeper, but it was one of the most obvious red cards I've seen in recent years and it's hard to see why Oliver didn't send him off striaght away.

Must say, fair pley to Millwall who were in the game and looking dangerous until well into the second half despite having been a man down for all but the first seven minutes - they caused the Palace defence a lot more problems than we did Villa's.

Despite Palace's 4-1 win over Villa in the week, Cardiff played a virtually full-strength Champions League team.

The gap between Cardiff and Villa is arguably far bigger than that between Palace & Millwall.

Cardiff may have had a better chance against Palace.

I laughed when the commentators said VAR need to determine if it was endangering a player.

    Talking of red cards

Anthony Gordon just got himself a three game ban for punching / aggressively pushing a Brighton player in the head.

Idiot will now miss three games including the League Cup final. Why would you do that. He was chasing a dead ball after offside had already been called. No need for it

And then an even up red for Lamptey, have to think if Newcastle weren't already down to 10 there's no way he's giving him a second yellow in that situation. Gordon is a very silly boy though.

Never heard a boot to the head being called that before.

Why did he feel the need to headbutt the keeper's foot?
