Re: 40 Killed In Hamas Attacks In Israel

    Here we go again.

Israel has cut off humanitarian supplies to Gaza in an effort to pressure Hamas into accepting a change in the ceasefire agreement to allow for the release of hostages without an Israeli troop withdrawal.

Oxfam said: “Israel’s decision, to block aid to over 2 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip as Ramadan begins, is a reckless act of collective punishment, explicitly prohibited under international humanitarian law. The government of Israel, as occupying power, has the responsibility to ensure that humanitarian aid can reach the population in Gaza.”

The international court of justice, weighing an allegation of genocide brought against Israel, has instructed Israel to facilitate aid deliveries to Gaza and its remaining population of 2.2 million. The international criminal court said when it issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu last year that there was reason to believe Israel had used “starvation as a method of warfare”.

In its latest report, in late February, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said 876,000 Palestinians in Gaza still suffered from emergency levels of food insecurity, and 345,000 were facing catastrophic food insecurity.

Even in the six weeks of the ceasefire, Israel kept tight control of what was allowed in humanitarian shipments. Aid agencies complained that a lot of medical equipment was blocked on the grounds it was “dual use” and that water tankers were also blocked, leaving people dependent on wells, which in the wake of conflict are insufficient for the population’s needs.

There are about 1,500 water access points operating across Gaza, and the UN says water production and supply are at about a quarter of prewar levels.

Health issues remain a primary concern, with an estimated 80% of Gaza’s health infrastructure destroyed by the war and 1,000 medical workers killed. The World Health Organization has estimated there are up to 14,000 Palestinians in Gaza in need of medical evacuation, including 4,500 children.

After the horrible delay in the release of 600 Palestinians from incarceration due on Saturday February 22nd, Thursday’s releases were hugely welcomed and must have been a great relief to the families. However, many of those released described torture and starvation at the hands of the Israeli prisons and some had had limbs amputated as a result, several were hospitalised. Regardless of the rarely reported fact that many of those incarcerated were held under administrative detention, such treatment of any prisoner is yet another violation of international law. Being held under administrative detention means no charge or trial; furthermore when there are trials, they take place within a Military Court system with a record of finding 99% of those accused to be guilty.

The double standards, notably in press and western politicians’ commentary is enraging and also helps perpetuate injustice. Meantime Phase 1 of the ceasefire deal has officially ended even as Hamas keeps saying it is ready to restart negotiations.

It has been just over six weeks since a ceasefire came into effect in Gaza, and it’s clear that it would more accurately be called a “reduce” fire, rather than a cessation. Scores of people are still being killed; enough, in any other scenario, to be deemed both alarming and newsworthy. More than 100 people have died since 19 January, Gaza’s civil defence service spokesperson says. Those killings constitute, alongside other breaches, a grim record of hundreds of reported ceasefire violations by the Israeli government.

The latest among them is Israeli authorities’ decision to halt humanitarian aid into Gaza, in order to put pressure on Hamas to accept new ceasefire terms: mere hours after the first phase of the ceasefire expired, Israel cut off all supplies. In doing so, Israel is using food and civilian relief as a political tool to achieve its objectives, a move that the Qatari foreign ministry, the midwife of hostage releases and ceasefire agreements over the past few months, called “a clear violation” of the terms of the truce and of international humanitarian law.

    -

In the West Bank, the pattern of slow but grinding assault has been unfolding for months, and escalating for weeks. The overall death toll in the West Bank since 7 October due to intensifying settler violence and Israel Defense Forces attacks stands at almost 1,000, according to the Palestinian health ministry. The ceasefire has only exacerbated the situation. As Gaza draws less of its resources and active military engagement, Israel has shifted its attention to the occupied territories in the West Bank in a process that has been described as “Gaza-ification”.

    -

The moment a ceasefire was agreed, Israel launched Operation Iron Wall, a military campaign in the West Bank, as if signalling with its timing that this is now a forever war of permanent vengeance. In the past year alone, more than 224 children have been killed in the West Bank by Israeli forces and settlers, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. To give an idea of how sharp the inflection point is, this number constitutes nearly half the total number of children killed in the West Bank since records began 20 years ago. Among them are Ayman al-Hammouni, his shooting caught on camera, adding to the archives of video and audio records of the chilling, panicked last moments and deaths of children across Palestinian territories. Among them also is two-year-old Layla al-Khatib, shot in her own home. And the unborn child of Sundos Jamal Mohammed Shalabi, eight months pregnant, who died along with the child when she was shot. And on it goes: relentless, unthinkable, unstoppable.

“Israel’s complete disregard for international law in the war in Gaza is now being replicated to the West Bank,” said B’Tselem’s executive director, Yuli Novak.

“Its activity there, as yet on a smaller scale than in Gaza, is already causing indiscriminate and disproportionate killing and destruction.”

Meanwhile, Starmer and Lammy continue to refuse to use the word 'genocide' in relation to what's happening in Gaza / West Bank. Twats.

Just watched the end of the latest BBC documentary....the road to 7th October

The ridiculous Abraham accords , a complete joke .....and the sight of Netanyahu showing the UN his map of greater Israel with no mention of the Palestinians was obscene

It's hardly a surprise it happened

Even the small stuff is important and paints a corner of the picture:

The Fire Brigades Union has announced that 20 MPs have signed an open letter calling for Israeli authorities to release a fire engine donated to Palestinian firefighters.

Fire Brigades Union members in Scotland donated a fire engine last year, packed with firefighting kit, equipment and medical supplies and arranged delivery to the port of Ashdod to be transported to Nablus in the West Bank.

It has been impounded by Israeli customs at the port since July 2024 despite having the necessary paperwork.

In November, firefighters and supporters held a demonstration outside the London embassy to demand the release of the fire engine.

The letter, signed by firefighters, trade unionists and MPs, calls for the immediate release of the fire engine so that it can be safely delivered to aid firefighters in Nablus.

After the Holocaust it gets a free pass. It can be and do anything it wants, with absolutely no moral censure from the rich and powerful who rule the World.

As Jewish Voice for Peace protestors occupy Trump Tower demanding the release of Palestinian student activist Mahmoud Khalil, Jacobin Magazine sets the enormity of the affair in context.

“No one is even pretending that Khalil is being targeted for any reason other than the politics of the protests he participated in,” writes Ben Burgis.

“Khalil’s arrest should be a wake-up call for those leftists and progressives who have forgotten why free speech is such a historically important left principle.”

Having attended nearly every national demonstration and countless local actions for Palestinian freedom, one remarkable aspect has been the diversity of people, spanning ages, backgrounds and faiths — challenging the mainstream media’s narrow depiction. Yet, one thing has stood out the most: the presence of older Jewish activists, many of whom have been dedicated to the struggle for decades.

It makes sense; many grew up alongside the birth of Israel, witnessing first-hand Zionist-driven expansion and subjugation of the Palestinian people, leading them to go against the grain and oppose Zionist ideologies.

A team of charity workers has been killed in Israeli strikes in northern Gaza, the UK-registered Al Khair Foundation has told the BBC.

The charity said eight people - including its volunteers and independent journalists documenting their activities - were killed when their vehicles were targeted on Saturday in what Hamas described as a "blatant violation" of the ceasefire agreement with Israel.

No body will ever say they are killers of aid workers.
