Thread: Bad night for Kortrijk

    Bad night for Kortrijk

A 2-0 defeat for Kortrijk this evening at Beerschot, who are already relegated and tailed off at the bottom of the league.

So, with just two games remaining, Kortrijk are second from bottom of the the four-team Relegation Round table, four points from safety and three points behind Cercle Brugge, who currently occupy the relegation play-off spot. To make matters worse for Kortrijk, Cercle Brugge play Sint-Truiden tomorrow evening, so the gap to safety will widen whatever happens in that game.

    Re: Bad night for Kortrijk

Cercle Brugge beat Saint-Truiden 3-1 last night which means, with two games left to play, Kortrijk are six points off safety and with a hugely inferior goal difference to Brugge.

Their only hope is to scrape into the relegation play-off, but they are four points behind Saint-Truiden with a significantly worse goal difference.

Kortriks final two games are away to Cercle Bruges and home to Saint-Truiden. A failure to win either will see them automatically relegated, although itll be out of their hands anyway if Saint-Truiden beat Beerschot next Sunday.

A Vincent Tan relegation double is very much on the cards. Have any other club owners ever overseen two relegations in the same season? No idea, but I doubt it.

Wow so after losing face yesterday he might lose 2 faces now.

What does losing 2 faces mean in Malaysian culture and where does that leave us?

On the plus side FK Sarajevo are third in their league, so it's not all doom and gloom in the Tan household.

He owns 49%. The other owner of a 49% stake is also the club president and takes an active role in running the club. Vinnie, I believe, doesn't. Read into that what you will.

Where did you get that info from? All I could really find was Wikipedia and the info there was contradictory.

It was from Wikipedia and LinkedIn. What was contradictory on Wikipedia?

On the right-hand bar with club information it says:

Owner: Vincent Tan (49.13%), Ismir Mirvić (49.13%)

Then, further down the page under the heading Club's domestic revival it says:

Since March 2019, FK Sarajevo is run by Vietnamese businessman Nguyễn Hoi Nam and the PVF Investment and Trading, JSC (Promotion Fund of Vietnamese Football Talents F.C.).

    From the third article:

"Also in 2019, he and the Promotion Fund of Vietnamese Football Talent Football Academy (PVF) - then part of Vingroup - acquired 60% of FK Sarajevo Club - the strongest team in the Bosnia & Herzegovina national championship at that time. However, in June 2021, Nam and domestic investors decided to end their investment in the club due to the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic."

    As clear as mud.

"However, the Malaysian businessman (Tan) laid the foundations for a new era and the club built a training centre and turned their youth academy into the best in the country. This year Tan sold 60% of shares to an unknown Vietnamese businessman Nguyen Hoai Nam and his Vietnam Football Development and Investment Fund. Tan’s departure coincided with the best season in the history of the club: managed by the former Hearts striker Husref Musemic, the club won their first ever Bosnian league and cup double."

This article from October 21 suggests Tan was still in charge

    Re: Bad night for Kortrijk

It seems Tan bought the club in 2013, then sold it to one of his Vietnamese Berjaya colleagues in 2019, then took control again in 2021. But that's just a guess.

I wonder what his motivation is? Next season it looks odds on that he'll own a club in the English third division, a club in the Belgian second division and a club in the Bosnia & Herzegovina Premier League.

I think you're right. There's a bit that says "In August 2021 Vincent Tan and Bosnian-American businessman Ismir Mirvić repurchased majority stakes from PVF Investment and Trading, JSC, with the former gaining 60% of club stakes and the prior gaining 30%. Mirvić, who was named club president, reestablished the club's supervisory board and formed a new, three-member board of directors. In September 2022, Tan and Mirvić renegotiated their majority stakes, each acquiring control of 49.13%."
    It's all a bit messy isn't it.
