How have other teams go on after relegation...

Here are how a selection of broadly comparable clubs (or larger) did following to relegation to league one

Coventry - largely uncompetitive for 5 seasons, then relegated to division 2 for a season, before taking 2 more seasons to get back to the championship (I believe they had significant financial issues for some of that time though)

Sunderland - 4 seasons in league one - 3 of them they made the playoffs, which they eventually went up via. Immediately competitive again in the championship upon their return.

Norwich - one season in league 1, promoted as champions, then followed that up by getting promoted to the premier league in the very next season.

Southampton - re-promoted in their second season in league one, and they also followed that up with a consecutive promotion to the premier league in the next season.

Leeds -Spend 3 seasons in league one, not finishing lower than 5th, - upon their return to the championship they were mid table for about 8 seasons before getting their act together.

Forest - spent 3 seasons in league one - just missing the playoffs, then losing in the playoffs before getting automatic promotion. Spent the next 12 or so years in the championship fluctuating wildly between good and bad.

Leicester - spent a single season in league 1, going back up as champions. Immediately competitive in the championship, promoted to the premier league within 5 years and won the premier league within 7.

Derby - 2 seasons in league 1, this is their first season back, have far too many former cardiff players to be considered good.

Bristol City spent 2 seasons in league 1, before returning to midtable in the championship

Bolton - Followed relelgation to league one with an immediate relegation to league 2 - they then bounced back up to league one and have been mostly competitive at that level since.

Obviously Birmingham have gone up at the first attempt also.

As can be seen though, the majority of these sides took a couple of attempts to get out of league one - some of them were able to use it as a springboard for further success though.

From memory, didn't Bolton have huge financial issues when they were relegated from the Championship? Points deductions, etc? I haven't checked but I'm pretty sure they were in a major mess.

I don't remember that, but it seems entirely plausible

Ipswich spent 4 seasons in league 1, but followed it up with back to back promotions

Just checked - in 2018/19 (when they were relegated) they were docked 2 points for failing to fulfil a fixture against Brentford. They had major financial issues (winding-up orders, unpaid wages, etc) throughout that season and most of the next.

At the end of the 208/19 season, they went into administration and were docked 12 points.

Few clubs have done the back to back promotion road, feel we are more likely to do the double relegation as things stand

In our case, I believe the chances of either are zero.

My ex-boss Eddie Davies at Strix owned Bolton 2004-2014, he wrote off around 180m (similar to Tans investment), it all started to go wrong at the end of his tenure, even though he kept putting money in. Amazing how much money there was in kettle thermostats, until the Chinese started pirating them!

You can’t start slowly. All this rubbish about look at the table after 10 games! It’s too late then, you need to start fast & maintain it.
