    Brian Barry-Murphy post Stockport

"It's very exciting when the goals go in as late as that for our team and for our supporters.

"To come to venues like this and play against teams like that, who had a successful season last year, is difficult.

"We're playing against a team who are very strong at home. We didn't find our rhythm early on.

"For us to show the character that we did in the second half and bounce back from what wasn't, to our standards, a great first half is testament to the players. The commitment and ability to keep going until the end was what pleased us most.

"I think all of our strikers - Yousef, Callum Robinson, Isaak Davies, as much as I say it is about the team, and we score goals as a team, they want to score because it fuels them.

"It was a great cross from Chris [Willock] to service that. I thought we looked quite dangerous at the end of the game. We tried to be as aggressive as possible. We put all of our attacking players on the pitch and go for it.

    "Sometimes fortune favours the brave.

"As much as the first half wasn't what we want, there were clear signs in the second half of the team we want to be, especially going right until the very end and attacking our opponents goal, in the swell of our away support.

"In the end, to give our fans the goal they deserve, is hugely satisfying."

None of what he says is wrong. But he fails to acknowledge the fact that the game could have easily been over by half time.

We finished strong, as he made the right substitutions but those players should have started. Chambers & Ng still have a foot in last season & it shows. Fish, Lawlor & Kpakio have to start.

Ng and Chambers look a level below Kpakio and Lawlor. And that’s bonkers. Get them back in the team.

Avoided telling us why he decided to change half the defence that’s keeping clean sheets.

I hope he doesn’t go all Omar Riza and thinking he’s too clever and ha to change something every game.

we need the whole squad to be firing if we are to keep up this challenge in the league. it's possible that Lawlor and kpakio keep this level of football for 40+ games, but it's equally likely they drop off or pick up injuries at some point.
Ng missed all of preseason and in fact hasnt played regularly in 6 months, and a lot of last season was injury hit. hopefully he's just a little ring rusty.

    David Challinor coments:

There's also a long thread here on a Stockport forum.

Thery are livid they threw that away.

This was posted around noon on Friday -
We will somehow steal this in the 97th minute, whichever keeper is between our sticks makes about 8 point blank saves and then we scramble one in late from a goal kick that was aimed to the corner flag which gets caught in a freak gust of wind and the Cardiff Keeper ends up caught in the netting after scrambling back and launching himself after the ball but ending up knocking it in off his face. #scenes

The Stockport match thread has over 42,000 views , remarkable how quiet this board is in comparison considering how small a club they are compared to us

Agree with this. not impressed by Chambers. If you are reading this just up your game and stake your place.

I can only assume that BBM thought Lawlor and Kpakio maybe tired after the Wales camp/travelling and Ng and Chambers needed some match fitness but he got it wrong. He should have started with the young lads and brought them off. Not the other way around. I feel like we had no fluidity for most of the game because we changed half the defence. A defence that has gotten used to playing together and in a regular system.

That was the problem, we were weaker defending and bringing the ball out, and starting the attacks. He rested them thinking they would be tired from the travel and time away from the main squad, but he’s now realised just how important they are to the team. It’s unlikely to happen again, other than maybe one eventual change in the back four for Osho. Our back four and keeper are probably the stongest unit in the team.

    Brian Barry-Murphy:

"Perry Ng had a really good training week and Dylan Lawlor has had a lot on his plate, playing a lot of games. So I thought it was a good time to freshen it up and give Calum Chambers the appearance that I felt he deserved.”

“We will make changes in team selection but only based on how the players are training and playing.”

“I don't think that should change, not for the sake of it. I don't want to be known as a tinkerman or anything like that. I'm not good enough to be that.”

“There will be changes for the Vertu Trophy game on Tuesday, I might be the tinkerman for that.”

“We have a very select squad but we have competition in almost every area. So all these players have to feel like they can play if they train like Perry and Calum have been.

Ronan and Dylan have played a lot of games and will benefit from playing less minutes today.

But I suppose if we hadn't have scored that late goal then I would have been wrong and still could be."

That is a sound assessment. Stockport pressed very high up the pitch, if say Kapakio had been dispossessed early on in the game leading to a goal then we would have had people saying we shouldn’t have put him back into the side after his struggles in the Canada match . Despite NG and Chambers not having a great game we still only conceded from a penalty.

That is 2 goals conceded this season, both penalties , we are pretty impressive defensively with a very good keeper, though it did feel like we got away with one on Saturday. I am also pretty sure the quality of opposition strikers means you do get away with giving up chances more than you do in the Championship
