    BB-M on Newport defeat

“It was obviously not the result we wanted,” Brian began. “The challenge facing us was we had to field a team, and we put everyone that was available to us in the squad. The plan wasn’t to include so many players tonight who also feature in league games.

"From that point of view, it was a difficult fixture for us. But, there were some exceptional bright spots for the young players who made their debuts for the Club.”

16-year-old Rob Tankiewicz became the youngest player to ever play for the Bluebirds, with that record later broken in the 65th minute as 15-year-old Axel Donczew entered the field.

“Rob Tankiewicz had a really good debut, and was also close to coming onto the pitch on Saturday. And for Axel to come on and show real signs of what we see in training is an insight into how high our hopes are for him.

“It’s probably a bit surreal for them in this moment. You can see from their families’ reactions that it’s a really proud moment for them. It’s an insight into what we want this club to become."

Looking ahead to our next fixture in the competition, a clash with Arsenal U21s in November, the gaffer concluded by speaking about how the Vertu Trophy helps young players.

“The beauty of this competition in my experience is that these games give these players the chance to play with First Team players.

"Those two have really earned their place in the squad. We have really high hopes for them in the future. They are very grown up, have a real awareness of how good they are through their humility and how they approach their training on a daily basis.”

This game will be remembered for the young players being given their debuts and very much not the result. Hopefully it shows the depth of the talent we have coming through over the next few years. Great to have a manager prepared to finally blood young players.

What it shows is the competition is a total farce. Nothing more, nothing less.

I’ve worked on the competition, been to numerous finals and many games besides

Don’t see it as a farce personally

    Indeed, but I think it's a shame.

This is obviously no criticism of the manager or the players themselves, but it's ludicrous that the record books will now show that our two youngest-ever first team players made their debuts in a contest that very obviously wasn't a first team game.

John Toshack made his debut in a Second Division game against Leyton Orient. Aaron Ramsey made his debut in a Championship match against Hull City. These two lads have made their debuts in a Mickey Mouse competition that sees Premier League clubs field under-21 teams and League One clubs like ours having to play despite nine players being away on international duty. It's nonsense.

Good for you. Each to their own. I think it ranks below the FAW Premier Cup.

The 71000 that attended the final last year would probably disagree with you (or the 42000 who attended the Birminghamless 2024 final)

The 569 who saw Wycombe beat Fulham's under-21's 3-1 last night would probably disagree with me too.

Listen, if Shrimpy says the Vertu Trophy ranks below the FAW Premier Cup then it ranks below it. Hes got 50 years in the game.

    Have you got it now?

When Swansea won the equivalent to this trophy their local rag claimed they had put 1927 and our cup win to rest.😂

They've won it twice, no less. But at least it was an actual first team competition back then as opposed to the pretend one it is now.

Would the 1,889 people who attended the last (bigger than this trophy) FAW Premier Cup final in 2008? Unless you mean its replacement The Welsh Cup, which had an attendance of 1,313 at the final last year

Easy, tiger. Who said the FAW Premier Cup was bigger?

You know I was being flippant anyway. The FAW Premier Cup was an absolute joke. As is this nonsense.
