I don't have the exact answer to a huge question like that, and my position of wanting to stop the mass murder of civilians doesn't mean that I automatically should.
I'll give it some sort go though - there was always going to be a backlash by Israel so an actual intelligence led limited military incursion trying to weed out Hamas, not indiscriminate bombing dressed up as intelligence.
They should have tried to protect civilians, limit collateral damage and not just treat anyone Palestinian as an extension of Hamas.
Created actual safe zones rather than the "safe zones" they created which also got bombed
Actually prosecute IDF Soldiers for war crimes rather than claiming every horrific incident of civilians being killed as a terrible accident
Allow international press in there to report on their actions
Not try to actively starve the population
They had the sympathy of the world after the 10th of October, the could have retained that had they retaliated with limited strikes or a more targeted operation aimed at the Hamas leadership. Instead of that they've seen it as an opportunity to level Gaza and mass murder its population which in turn will inevitably create thousands more Hamas sympathisers years down the line
