    Brian Barry-Murphy on Bolton defeat

"It was a very disappointing goal from our point of view, when it comes so late and you can't do anything about it."

"When something like that happens, it's obviously a very disappointing day for us all.

"I think Bolton are a team who are going to be at the top of the table for a reason. They're a very good team, very dangerous when they broke on us when we gave the ball away in certain areas.

"Large parts of our game were okay; we got towards the final third pretty easily, and they paid us a lot of respect in terms of how they pressed us, but our final product, in terms of creating and getting into shooting areas and opportunities, was very poor.

"And as such then, when you don't have enough attacking momentum or create enough chances, you're always in danger of conceding a goal like we did. Today that was the case.

"For as much possession as we had, we didn't create enough chances close to their goal, or enough shooting opportunities. To have such little impact on the keeper is disappointing from our point of view, and something that we're very conscious of.

"When you concede a goal in the circumstances that we did, it can feel very sickening. But my message to the players is that we can use that as motivation to try and make sure it doesn't happen again. There will be no blame culture in that dressing room - we take responsibility for what happened to us, and make it better. We won't be feeling sorry for ourselves after today. We have to be really clear on how we improve, to convert that possession into meaningful chances, shots and goals."

    On injuries:

"Chris Willock was injured in training yesterday, so that one was enforced. He's had a scan today. He had an issue before the international break with his quad. He played last week against Reading but couldn't complete training yesterday, so we'll have to watch this space on that one.

"It's really good to have Alex Robertson back involved. He had a really positive impact on our performance, and he'll be satisfied with his first game back.

"I think Joel Bagan had a hip injury, so he had to come off, and he'll be assessed."

It was entirely avoidable. From the slack pass to the lack of closing down there were things the players could have done to prevent the shot

Completely agree, it looked like we were playing to the clock and not the whistle. It was a decent goal in fairness, but was definitely preventable if we weren’t arrogant enough to think there wasn’t enough time for it.

It was a much better goal than just “decent”. We’ve got some good young in defenders this season, but I see little or no evidence of an improvement in finishing and/or final ball.

And yet we’re the joint second-highest scorers in the division.

Let's see if we are still the joint second-highest scorers in the division after twenty six games. I have my doubts....

How about creating a few chances during 90 minutes of football? It won't do anything about giving away sloppy goals, but at least we could make sure they don't affect the game's outcome.

That pass which cost us the game today was complacent and naive - and I’d be making the player concerned’s a life a misery this week.

I haven't seen a replay but City were breaking with numbers.and the pass was most definitely on. Nyakuwha thought about it for a second, and then went with his left foot but didn't look confident and it didn't work out. He gave possession away near the halfway line, (something other City players had done all afternoon.- Colwill gave Bolton the ball every time he touched it). It was naive but entirely in keeping with what had gone before and we could have defended better once possession was conceded.

    Good shout.
The amount of times RC passed to the opposition, or behind one of our players, was embarrassing.(..over hit passes that go out for a goal kick as well.)

    That's a bit extreme.

You’ve been on your soapbox for years about young players not getting a chance at the club and then you want to make one of thems life a misery for a week because of a loose pass? I’m sure that will do his confidence the world of good.

Perhaps we should bring Steve Morison back so he can throw the kid under the bus publically to appease all those who want him punished for a mistake.

Like someone said earlier...we made shit loads of inaccurate passes.
If your whole game tactics are based on a passing game, rule number one, learn to pass.

IÂ’m not sure how long he was on as a sub but it was quite an appalling performance, his only mitigation is that he wasnÂ’t the only one by any means.
I’d be interested to hear the conversation between Vincent ‘shoot more’ Tan and BBM this week.

It was a lazy, sloppy pass, no doubt about that, but it didn't cost us the game. There were eight or nine City players behind the ball when Nyakuhwa surrendered possession on the halfway line. The game was lost by a combination of a poor pass, the lackadaisical defending that followed and a bit of individual brilliance.

I've just watched the extended highlights and they confirmed what I thought had happened while watching the game live yesterday - Lawlor tamely surrendered possession in equally or even more dangerous positions on three separate occasions, while Fish did so once. Should their lives also be made a misery this week?

Giving the ball away cheaply is a problem that runs throughout the team. However, it seems that players like the Kpakio and Lawlor are beyond criticism. The latter in particular seems to have taken Rubin Colwill's 'golden boy' crown as far as some people are concerned and therefore he doesn't get the sort of grief Nyakuhwa is getting when he does the exact same thing.

Re: Brian Barry-Murphy on Bolton defeat

If we're looking to apportion blame - so I will!! - for a very disappointing defeat then mine sits all with the manager. Individual players made mistakes and took wrong decisions during the game - happens to most teams most games. But the manager had all week to prepare and plan and set a team up for this game. He unnecessarily talked Bolton up pre game - imo - and I firmly believe set out for a 0-0 and a point. I was disappointed with team selection and even more disappointed with 5 like for like substitutions. He made no 'real' attempt to win the game. It was crying out for Salech and Robinson together for last 30 mins, drop Rubin back 1 - as he had no positive impact on game at no.10 - and remove Turnbull from the pitch. But the most disappointing aspect of all was the complete lack of intent - and that sits squarely with the manager in my view.
