Massive shock - played under 16s cricket with him at Cardiff - top person and a genuinely nice guy - remember seeing him a few years later and him going out of his way to talk to me and my wife - so sad
Sad to hear, but, as remarked above, he didn’t enjoy the best of health after retiring from the game. He and Steve James (who lost his daughter a few years ago) have to be Glamorgan’s best ever opening pair and I’d say the 1997 Championship team that they both played for was their best ever side.

Asa Tribe made his debut for Paarl Royals yesterday and actually top scored for them with 14 runs.
Unfortunately, they were bowled out for 49 and lost by 137 runs.
I loved watching the side between 93 and 97 when they won the Sunday League and County Championship. He was a great opener and captain in both formats. Much too young to go.
Yep only 62. I didn't know Hugh had cancer the first time let alone again. Awful. Very sad news.
Difficult to argue with this have great memories of that era although I was too young to remember the class of 69.

1969 was a bumper mitching year, many a time school was skipped to get under the fence at Sophia Gardens.
Just saw highlights of his 51 in the third game, looked impressive. Opening up against Boult, Rabada and Rashid Khan in front of a big crowd but he took it in his stride.
Paarl Royals have won their last two after the disastrous first game and are in third place for now. They play again this afternoon.
I only saw the 97 side on tv whereas I saw all the Sophia Garden games during the school holidays and the Swansea games on TV.
I would therefore put the 69 side pretty much on the same level as the 97 side

Indeed I was surprised to see that Malcolm Nash took more wickets at a better average than Waqar Younis 28 years later.
And they were the first side for many years to go unbeaten during the season ,(not sure if it has happened since..
The single run victory against Essex must be one of the greatest country games ever particularly the last a.fternoon.
Many of the same side played in the win against the Aussies in 68 indeed some also played in the 64 victory.
Actually,I have just convinced myself that personally I would go for the 69 side as the best in my memory.

Another win and another good knock from Asa Tribe. 34 this time, chasing a low total against the same opponents. The commentators were impressed, Mark Butcher in particular, as he straight drove Trent Boult for 6 and then hit Rabada over mid-wicket for another one.
Rashid Khan got him again, a poor and seemingly unnecessary shot when well set (he did the same a couple of times in the Blast last season but Jamie Smith has made every other dismissal in the history of cricket look acceptable for now).
Asa was shouted at by Rashid Khan on his dismissal (the camera only caught the word 'OFF') and given a mouthful by him on the way off which was interesting. I only saw the highlights so I'm not sure what led up to that but it looks like he's making an impression out there.
Kevin Pietersen was enamoured with him the other day too. He's definitely making an impression out there, and if he's getting inside the heads of some of the world's top bowlers, that's a great sign.
Btw, how beautiful does Paarl look? Not a bad place to go and play some cricket for a few months at all.

Going back to a previous topic here.. Ingram isn't in the SA20 from what I could see, could this finally be the point where he becomes a domestic player for us? I have not been able to find anything around but I am certain this was talked about a few years back. If we could do that with Ingram, it opens the door to an opening bat to partner Tribe and an opening bowler. We absolutely can't go into next season without an overseas opening bowler.
Khawaja for the season anyone? Would be a fantastic signing given his recent retirement (no meddling from the aussies)
Shame to see Neser sign elsewhere given the form he is in BUT I can't help but think hes impressed a few during this series and might be a bit more unavailable than he would have been. Fernando again? If we can get him going earlier.. He seemed to take 3 games to hit form every time he landed.
Maybe I have missed a load of news and this is all wide of the mark, but it has felt like radio silence coming from the club.

Yeah, Billy Root extending wasn't exactly the signing news I've been waiting for.
Welsh Fire on the other hand are doing some excellent business, with Rachin Ravindra and Marco Jansen joining Phil Salt for 2026. I wouldn't be surprised if Tribe and Kellaway play for them either.
Talking of Tribe, I think we jinxed him in the SA20 by bigging up his performances. He's had a run of low scores since and got left out for one game. Looks like he might be coming in down the order today in the Royals qualifier game. I'll try and reverse jinx him by saying he's a waste of space and Glamorgan should be sending him out on loan next season.
Didn’t realise he was captained by Dan Lawrence for the royals. Seems a strange captain choice based on the limited times I have seen him play!
Not watching it for now but I saw Lawrence do the toss, even though Cricinfo has Hermann as captain. Lawrence doesn't seem captain material but he's 28 now so it's something he should be moving towards.

It was, yes. 30 off 16 balls, some really nice shots. Good interview with him too as he came off. He smiles a lot when he plays but there's plenty of grit in there too. Good experience for him out there, hopefully he can finish the tournament well.
