It's a tricky one as his scoring rate is probably too slow to be a no6 (when he does score that is). Ben Kellaway could open but he's thriving with having Carlson for company. It's a bit of a dilemma but think we're still a batter short.

I still think we should be looking to bring an opener in on loan. The problem is that, especially at the standard we’re playing now, there’s not going to be many, if any, players good enough to stand a reasonable chance of coming here and doing well that teams are going to be prepared to loan out. One who I would make an a enquiry about is Ali Orr of Hampshire. He’s still only 25 and was being talked about as an England player of the future when he first broke into the Sussex team a few years ago.

However, he had a bit of a falling out with Sussex coach Paul Farbrace, hence his move along the coast to Hampshire where, for whatever reason, he’s struggling to get a game in what looks to be the First Division’s weakest team.

Maybe Orr has a bit of an attitude problem because it’s hard to understand his lack of games for a failing Hampshire batting line up (he averages35 in the Four Gay game), but Richard Dawson is proving to be a cut above average as a coach and so, perhaps, he could get Orr to start fulfilling his early promises?

Remarkable at the age of 18. Already taken quite a few First Division scalps, aside from the hat-trick of course. I think he bowls what is known as a "heavy ball." He does hurry batsmen.

And he seems to be a useful batsman.

I appreciate all forms of cricket. They all have a place. I get a bit sick of ‘traditionalists’ moaning when the 4 day game attracts about 200 people a day. If we didn’t have the likes of T20, clubs would fold.

Just like Welsh rugby, clubs are kept afloat by internationals funding and the ‘knockabout’ you refer to. Didn’t Glam get saved by WG some time ago? They were on their knees financially.

How many genuinely memorable T20 games have Glamorgan played in the twenty three years I think it is of the format’s existence? I can only think of one - Carlson hitting 137 i believe it was against Somerset. I don’t dislike T20 cricket, but, for me it’s like that old cliche about Chinese takeaway meals -you’ve forgotten all about it three hours later.

On the other hand, the last four day game played at Cardiff will be remembered for the rest of their lives by many who watched it.

I can think of a number of memorable T20 games. The one that really sticks out was v Kent in 2014. Kent only needed 3 off the final over with 5 or 6 wickets in hand. I turned to my boys and said it was all over but we stayed until the end. Michael Hogan bowled an unplayable final over and took two wickets. Kent scrambled two runs but then suffered a run out off the final ball and the game was tied.
There have been a number of last ball dramas in other games too.

Solid start. 101 without loss is a good platform. Depends on the target and how many overs are left in the match. If they are chasing, that is a great pace. If they are batting first, they need to push on in the last 10.

Decent effort after being 94-7, hopefully Douthwaite isn't out for too long. Great knock from him. Felt like a game we should've won though.

I wa# very impressed by Farooqt’s last three overs and I’m still not sure why Douthwaite appears to be regarded as just a one day player these days (albeit he was injured earlier in the season): but there wasn’t much on show to suggest we can carry our red ball improvement into the Blast. Bit too early to jump to firm conclusions yet mind.

Kellaway was almost a carbon copy, few drives along the ground and his first unconventional shot gets caught. Smale looked rusty, as he did at the start of last year, but he somehow always seems to stay there with wickets falling. I am surprised Cooke is in the team. Douthwaite played a match winning innings, unlucky for him and in some ways a waste of one of his best T20 innings for us.

I was shocked at the crowd for the first day at edgbaston, lunch hit and the playing area was swamped, 4 day cricket has no cut through in Cardiff it seems.

And talking about wicketkeepers, Derbyshire have made theirs captain for this season's Blast. Not the career path any of us would've expected when he was breaking through here but good luck to him.

People tend to emphasize Ingram’s age (41 in July), but the fact Cooke turns 40 a week today never gets mentioned. I’ve just Googled forty year old wicketkeepers in first class cricket and was told they’re “remarkably rare” with Alec Stewart, Jack Russell and Adam Gilchrist being examples. However, although Stewart kept on -laying until he was 41, my guess is he only played as a wicket keeper in about two thirds of the games he played. Apparently, Gilchrist was in semi retirement when he played T20 cricket past 40 and Russell retired soon after turning 40.

Cooke’s been a brilliant servant for Glamorgan and is probably the best batsman out of the wicket keepers we’ve had. Also, I’ve seen little evidence of a decline in his keeping this season, but his batting figures aren’t great. It seems odd that he’s being used in the one day stuff at an age where most wicketkeepers have long since given up the job -Horton is a good keeper and,on current form, Cooke is no better batsman than him, so why not give the veteran a rest for the one day stuff?
