Thread: Favourite world cups

    Favourite world cups

Forget this year's effort, which were everyone's favourite world cups / world cup moments from yesteryear?

I think Italia 90 was my favourite. I enjoyed France 98 too.

1970 for me, probably because it was the first one I watched on the tellybox but that Brazil team was something else.
I would say that final was the best too, for the same reasons.
Also I was ridiculously happy at being able to see Rivelino play in a 1978 friendly at Wembley as at that time he was the last of the 1970 team still playing for Brazil.

What a team that was. Possibly the best ever.

Argentina1978 for me, Holland’s great team with Arie Haan scoring from 40 yards when ever he fancied, Peru beating Scotland after Joe Jordan’s antics at Anfield, the ticker tape and brilliant players we’d never heard of like Mario Kempes and Ossie Ardiles. I was 12 at the time so it’s the first World Cup I properly remember which probably has something to do with it but it’s still my favourite. 🇦🇷

In no particular ofder, Spain 82, Italia 90, Mexico 86. USA 94 wasn't bad either, and France 98. After that they all become a bit of a blur for me, kids arriving and working long hours all over the country. If i had to pick one, then ot would be Spain 82, Paulo Rossi, Karl heinz rummenigge, Michel Platini, Pierre Littbarski, zbigniew Boniek, Oleg Blokhin etc. 86 because of Maradona, the only footballer that i have ever idolised (Dave Bennett and Jason Koumas come close). And that fat cheeky mascot that was an orange, Naranjito has to be the best mascot of all.

There's a fat orange mascot this year too. I wouldn't call him cheeky though.

Probably France 98 or Japan Korea 2002. Last year's final will probably never be topped though

The 1966 World Cup in England was my favourite. I saw the Argentina v Spain (2-1) game at Villa Park, the game before Antonio Rattin got sent off at Wembley in the Q/F against England. I managed to get all the authentic autographs of the English, Brazilian and Portuguese squads and a World Cup Willie, I kid you not, tie.

Has to be 1970 for me. First one I saw in colour, seeing the best international team ever, worshipping Rivelino....and watching the football when I should have been revising for my 'O' levels !

Other than 1966 when Pele was kicked to pieces, it was my first chance to marvel at skills you very rarely saw in our game. All the kids seemed to be over the park trying to bend the ball like Rivelino.

    Re: Favourite world cups

82 for that Brazil side. Maybe the best side not to win a World Cup.

86 Maradonas World Cup. Don't think we will witness a single individual dominating so much ever again.

Italia 90 not sure im being overly nostalgic of this but seeing the footage reminds me of being young , socialising , the music etc I was abroad shortly after the World Cup in Greece with friends and and there still seemed a feel good factor from it. Gazza was still dominating the tabloids many weeks after the tournament. Final was crap.

This pretty much sums mine up to for the same reasons.
    82,86,90.

    Loved them.

If choosing one it'll be Spain 82, Rossi, the Brazil team containing Eder, Socrates and Zico, Nareys toe poke, Northern Ireland beating the hosts and that Tardelli celebration.

Favourite moments though are Maradona in 86, scoring the best two goals ever seen for me personally, his second goal against England only being eclipsed by the 'Hand of God' which is the greatest World Cup goal due to the fact it still has Peter Shilton frothing at the mouth even after all these years.

Espana 82 for me. First World Cup I watched properly. I also enjoyed 86,98,06,18 and 22.
I really donÂ’t get the popularity of Italia 90. It had some great stories, but the football was largely dreadful. Think that World Cup has the lowest average goals per game of any World Cup?

1978 for me. The best ever atmosphere in World Cup Finals, bar none.

1986 the Maradona World Cup. As you said, he dominated the whole show. For me he will always be the GOAT

    Re: Favourite world cups

My earliest memories are of Scotland in the 1978 tournament, losing to Tefilo Cubilas and Peru, the needing to beat the Dutch by 3 goals but failing despite Gemmils goal. The ticker tape and music was brilliant.

I remember being disappointed that Brazil didn't win the 82 tournament, as I was too young to remember their previous wins, but loved the French and Italian teams that year. My Grandparents went on holiday to Spain just after that tournament and brought me back a Naranjito keyring and pint glass. I still have the pint glass.

Was the 1970 one when Socrates stole the show, or was that later on?
