People think of the Stranglers and Ian Dury/Blockheads as punk. Neither of them were musically but they had a punk ethos and were undoubtedly a part of that scene.

They were never really punk. They rode that wave for a bit though.

I think The Raven is my favorite album of theirs.

I think punk was just a name

Some of the heavy riffing by the stranglers , undertones , pistols .....bodies for example, as the song starts , stiff little fingers etc were straight out of the rock 🤘 locker

Killing Joke were popular with the punks late on the scene but a lot of heavy rocks fans like myself loved Killing Joke

Some people have said that the New York Dolls were the first punk band but you could go back as far as Syd Barrett and early Who/Stooges.

I'd say you can go back further than that - this is a punk record as far as I'm concerned;-

Punk is an attitude I think, but whatever it is and whether the bands referred to above were punk or not, they were like a breath of fresh air in the mid to late seventies - the world had heard more than enough from pompous prog rock bands by then.

JJ Burnell. Best bass player ever.

Always liked and still like JJ"s Bass tone.
He has a signature Bass made by UK company called Shuker.

    Jah War
    In a Rut

Like the way jj burnel went off on one instead of just following the drums

Phil Lynott was great for doing that , leading the long

Labels are arbitrary really. Sniffin' Glue fanzine in the 70s gave the following advice on how to create punk which was, I think: Steal a guitar, learn three chords, form a band.

But you can progress from that in many directions and still retain the original spirit.

Brilliant classic track, even though I had to watch 5 seconds of Vic Reeves promoting B&Q Gardener of the year before it started.

I am a lover of all music but mostly a rock and metal fan

I always found UK punk a bit tinny with no bottom end

Apart from GBH , Discharge , Conflict

999 , UK subs did not have a powerful enough sound to me

But some of the American punk , especially the dead Kennedys and later minor threat and black flag and fugazi were loved by us rockers because of the heavy guitar work

People can place bands in any genre they want but if they are loud and are driven by guitars then that will do for me

    Punk meets metal

Don't get too bogged down by it all. I'll dance to Abba if I'm in the right mood, and they can be gothic as as **** if we're getting into labels.

The Stranglers had an aggressive, provocative attitude which sort of aligned them to the punk movement, but their music was more complex and polished than your typical punk band of the time.

Clearly influenced by The Doors, they had this distinctive gothic organ sound which sometimes borders on prog rock, fairly lengthy songs with frequent solo breaks.

Looking back now, I think them and Television laid the groundwork for the post-punk scene.

The Stooges were a hard rock band for sure, but there were elements of punk in their sound too.

Nobody was playing like this in 1972
