Having crowds at the Cardiff City Stadium - results

Since relegation from the Premier League in 2019 we've played 64 games at the Cardiff City Stadium - 34 with a crowd, 30 without. This is how we've got on (all stats are for all competitions).

    With a crowd

    P 34 W 11 D 11 L 12 F 43 A 47

    Without a crowd

    P 30 W 12 D 7 L 11 F 48 A 33

Obviously there's a lot more going on than just whether or not there's a crowd. This season has been a pretty dismal one and will skew figures for when we've had a crowd or not. However, it's noticeable that we've had better results on the road this season than at home, where our home form is likely to be the key to our survival.

Until the 2020 lockdown we'd lost 3 out of 21 home games. Since then we've lost 20 out of 43, almost half. Prior to the lockdown we'd won 8 out of 21 home games. Since then we've won 14 out of 43, less than a third.

When we returned from lockdown we won 3 out of the 6 remaining home games, only losing to Blackburn and the playoff semi to Fulham. In 2020/21 we won 3 of our first 13 home games but under McCarthy won 3 of his first 4 home games. Since we thrashed Derby 4-0 on March 2nd we've faced 19 home games and won 4. Our worst run in our history is 3 wins in 20 home games, so we're close to our worst home form of all time, crowds or no crowds.

And people still talk about our ground being a “fortress”. That’s a pathetic record, not helped by us having a defence which has become increasingly vulnerable to counter attacks. Am I right in thinking that the last clean sheet we kept at home was against Preston almost a year ago when they had two penalties saved?

Edit - just remembered there was an awful 0=0 with Stoke a few weeks later, but it’s still a woeful record.

Yes, it's a club record which keeps on growing.

For what it's worth, I reckon that not having a crowd wasn't such a bad thing yesterday. There would have been groans of disappointment in the early exchanges. I dread to think what comments would have been hurled at Isaak Davies for missing that chance.

The youngsters are used to playing in front of little to no crowds so they probably take to it better than the senior players. Mind you they’re doing most things better than the seniors, story of our season.

Embarrassing home record all the same and it doesn’t look like improving any time soon either.

There hasn’t been a game for quite some time where I’m confident we can keep a clean sheet, our defending, the biggest strength in both of our promotion seasons, has been woeful since the first 2 weeks of the season

The irony is that we have so many defenders on our books that simply are not up to it.
