6 of the starting line up were Welsh born (I think)

It’s a long time since that happened, I can’t remember it in my 57 seasons.

The squads for 2000/01 and 2001/02 contained loads of Welshmen. Pretty sure we'd have had games during that period where six or more were in the string line-up considering we had the likes of Jason Bowen, James Collins, Robert Earnshaw, Kevin Evans, Danny Gabbidon, David Hughes, Andy Legg, Layton Maxwell, Mark Walton and Scott Young at the club (Rhys Weston was also here, but he was born in England).

In the absence of Eric, do you fancy the challenge? Gabbs, Ginge, Earnie, Bows & Leggie would have been in a team together. Otherwise I’ll have to get up in the attic!

I've just plucked out one game at random - final game of the 2000/01 season (1-3 defeat at Hartlepool).

The starting line-up included Earnshaw, Evans, Gabbidon, Legg, Walton and Young (and Weston). Bowen came on as a sub.

Last league match we played with 11 Welsh born players was season 1962/63 away at Southampton in a 5-3 win.

The starting line-up for the previous game (3-1 victory over Shrewsbury at NP) included Bowen, Evans, Gabbidon, Legg, Walton and Young (and Weston). Earnie came on as a sub in that one.

Have there ever been as many home grown Welsh players though?

Kpacio Lawlor the 2 Colwills Ashford and Isaak Davies off the bench.

Is it fair to say the stick Darren Purse gets in some quarters is very harsh.?

Cheers. It’s great to see, then & now. We’ve played many games in recent times without Welsh representation

True, but he spent a few years in the Cardiff Academy (with a couple of loans out) before becoming a part of the First Team squad.

Like Joel Bagan (who started football life in the Southampton Academy) we can claim Turner as a Cardiff Academy product.

Jogging my fading memory with the help of Wiki, Turner joined Cardiff from Leeds (via a loan to Haverford West County) in September 2021. He didn't start training with the First Team squad until the start of the 2023-24 season.

I thought Turner was outstanding yesterday. He was born in Llanelli so is 100% and with the sparse choice at GK in the Wales senior squad it's not inconceivable he could get a call up if he takes his chance with City.

The goalkeeper situation is fascinating. Nathan Trott seems certain to be coming in and you would have thought if the club are paying money for him he'd be pretty much a guaranteed starter with Turner as back-up for league games and probably first choice for the various cup competitions.

Hopefully, this means Horvath and Alnwick will be on their way. I don't rate either of them and never have.

Half a season with City he'd have a decent chance at playing regularly for Wales you'd think, don't think we had a single player in the national setup last season who was a regular at any professional level?

Horvath wasn't there yesterday (I think), so I think he's on his way. I wouldn't be surprised to see Alnwick lining up against us this season either.

A single keeper you mean, surely?

Turner won't start here, I'd be amazed if Trott is leaving Copenhagen to sit on the bench here

Yes I mean keeper, by my very shallow research of all the players around the senior squad and u21s the closest would be Harrington who played less than half of the season at Fleetwood in league two. Not a single goalie played the majority of their teams games, which is pretty shocking for a team that has always had decent depth in goal even when we’ve been shite.

Fair point about Trott although I’m not sure exactly what the hold up is there.

Darlow came into the Leeds team at the end of last season but yeah that was about it

    Unless you count TNS' keeper

I once played in a local league game in a Somerset/Devon/Dorset league in which 7 of the starting eleven of team from Chard I played for were related!
