Just gone 1-0 down to a Philogene goal at Ipswich after dominating the first 20 minutes.
Watching the game, I was reminded of my old buddy, Gil Reece, and googled his name to see what it said.
I'd played for St Patrick's in Grangetown, where Gilbert started, for a number of years both before and after having 2 years at Newport in their Welsh League side but without ever getting a first team call. Anyway, when Gilbert joined Newport as a part-timer (before his Sheff Utd move in 1965) and would pick me up on the A48 at Llanrumney twice-weekly to go training with the other part-time players.
Softly spoken, with a quick wit, he was a real gent who had over 200 appearances and 58 goals for United before returning to Cardiff to make 100 more with 23 goals for City between 1973-76. He also played 29 times for Wales scoring twice.
Alongside the Wiki entry is this cracking shirt Gilbert wore for Wales against Poland in Katowice in 1973:

Great. i want all other teams to lose all the time.
The Blades are a shambles here… How terrible must we had been to get relegated last season?![]()
Me too , unfortunately they cant all lose.
Is football becoming even more popular . Ipswich looks jammed packed , they have just been relegated, haven't had the greatest start to this season .
3-0 Sheff Utd haven't had a great start to the season either, I particularly don't like them. Good call sacking Chris Wilder again.
the two Sheffield clubs are 23rd and 24th in the Championship - 9 games between them with just the one point
Hang on - 5th goal just gone in
The blades look very poor this evening.
Sheff U owners getting karma for sacking Wilder.
Not sure how this Selles fella keeps getting jobs. He could be looking for a new one next week.
Christ, I actually wanted Selles for the Cardiff job over BBM because I thought he'd done excellently at a Reading side on life support. Thank god I wasn't listened to.
Home to Charlton next, fail to win that and their start looks as bad, if not worse, than ours last season.
