Thread: Jack Whitham

    Jack Whitham

I was watching an old “The Big Match” yesterday and Jack Whitham scored a hat trick for Liverpool against Derby. It was 1971 and Tosh was out injured. Amazing to think he scored a hat trick at Anfield, and yet did bugger all for us. I think he ended up below Derek Showers in our pecking order. Injuries must have played a big part in his demise.

    Re: Jack Whitham

Whitham had scored thirty eight goals in seventy eight matches, all in the First Division, when he signed for us on a free, so that’s a huge clue as to how much his career was set back through injury - I can remember watching tha highlights of that Derby game and he looked like a player who relied a lot on pace.

He sounds like quite talented bloke in other fields as well.

100% Billy Woof, scored in every game that he played for us, that’s some record.

We had been circling the drain for a few seasons when Whitham joined us . only staying up in the last game the season before thanks to Tony Villars equaliser. Despite having Johnny Vincent and Gil Reece who were decent for us we were relegated.
