Four Group winners compete for the Nations League Trophy
Bottom team in each Group relegated to League B
Nations League matches to be played in Sep / Oct and November.
Teams to face each other home and away.
The two best placed Group Winners (if they have not already qualified via the full World Cup qualifying group in 2021) will get a World Cup 22 play off place.
Decent group that, sick of playing Ireland though, both Northern and Republic
Feckin Ireland
Tidy group that on paper at least.
Anyone else adopted Kosovo as their second nation? I find myself interested in their results now as they get better year on year.
England spanked by Belgium again.
So now the Nations League is part of WC qualifying?
Europe has 13 places at World Cup
There will be 10 WC qualifying groups. Winners qualify automatically.
10 runners up will go into play-offs.
The two best ranked Nations League winners not qualifying or runners up will also go into play offs.
The 12 teams in the play offs will go into three groups of 4 and play semis and a final for the 3 remaining places in the WC Finals
Chances are all League A winners will qualify for the World Cup through the normal qualifying route. Or at least finish top two in their World Cup qualifying group (being played Mar - Nov 2021) so will be at Qatar or have a play off place.
After that qualifying is complete they will look back at the Nations League winners and the two best Group winners who have not made the World Cup or World Cup qualifiers will get a play off place.
So potentially a League B or even a League C group winner could get a World Cup qualifying play off spot.
I've spent hours on this with my son going over all the possibilities.
The 55 teams in the Nations League are ranked 1 Portugal to 55 San Marino. Wales are ranked 19, Scotland 21 and Northern Ireland 28.
To get into the play-offs a team has to win its Nations League group. So if all the Nations League Group winners in Pot A qualified for the World Cup automatically and Wales, Scotland and NI won their respective groups from Pot B (but weren't in the top 2 of their WC qualifying group), then Wales and Scotland would take the remaining two places and NI and all the Nations Group winners with lower rankings in League B,C and D would lose out.
Hope this makes sense.
Yeah cheers I've got it now, i was just being a bit thick.
