  • Labours Five Missions for the UK

Launched today. All of it is easier said than done of course and the last one we pretty much already are anyway, but hard to argue with the principles.

Am only surprised there isn't something specifically on Housing.

The highest sustained growth in the G7
An NHS fit for the future
    Safer streets
    Breaking down barriers to opportunity
Make Britain a clean energy superpower

The usual suspects will say these are bland, unadventurous, etc. (and lacking some jokes!!) but they provide a reasonable basis for the next GE's manifesto. Nothing controversial, keep it simple and it's notably more ambitious than the current governments five pledges.

WRT to housing I'm sure their will be greater detail in the actual manifesto, just as there will be on defence, education, social security, et al.

Way too soon to be over specific on policy, best to keep the powder dry.

Dear Sir Keir these are flimsy targets in the knowledge they can be sought of achieved as they are not targeted or measurable:

I've sent you mine so you can win the election :

Illegal / lawful immigration : that is costing our society dearly such as health , housing , education and police budgets .
Off shore asylum safe routes only , boat folk returned to French shores into our Asylum clearance unit . UK families funding these family related crossings prosecuted ( yep it's a thing as war stricken folk are usually penniless )

NHS: Privatise as Blair did sections of health service to fund the core service of social and health care and reintroduce 1p health tax for over 60k earners ring fenced for social care ( not oppose it this time ) .

IA : ntroduce no strike legislation for core public services . Legislation to make unions put companies offers to its members each time a new offer us made. Decesions by small committees is not democracy. Strike Ballots should have 90% minimum membership involvement. After 3 revised offers ACAS makes final decesion on acceptance, this removes the risk of political based strikes ..

Police : lose over paid management and Chief Inspectors double the 20k promise Tories target all on the street coppers . Remove the the racial profile worries that effect police investigations ie the Rotherham Pakistan communities scandal. Remove policing from local authorities.

Tax Introduce 12% corporation tax . Up to 30k earners pay 15% .
      God speed Sir Bier ..

The last one - along with Tories et al, the obsession that's going to cost us all. The Scunthorpe steelworks are losing 300 - probably all 3000 will go soon. It's costing them twice in energy that their European competitors are paying. The Govt. offered financial backing, but on the proviso they reduce their carbon footprint !! The Company turned them down, saying it would have cost them tens of £billions. I don't know about Starmer but this lot are f****ng useless..

It's hard to get excited but I think all labour have to do now is play it safe. Their biggest risk now is needing coalition partners. I am sure it could happen but it's hard to imagine a situation where the Tories recover enough to win a majority and if they don't but are largest party, there are only a handful of people who would prop them up.

The main issue with all of this of course is that Britain has faced major problems since 2007/2008 which have been exacerbated by other influences like brexit and the pandemic. I think we are past the point where fiddling around the edges will fix anything.

The saving grace might be that labour does have some more creative solutions that they aren't revealing because they don't need to take the risk, you don't need to stick to manifesto after all

On housing, isn't it mad that if somebody proposed trying to create the economic conditions whereby for a decade real terms wages rose and house prices stagnated they would be decried as a lunatic trying to 'make ordinary Brits poorer'. It is, of course, exactly what Britain needs but so brainwashed are we as a society that we can't see how destructive the current model is.

It would be something if Labour took housing seriously and gave it some priority in a future government programme. A return to the ideas and energy and competence that we saw when Nick Raynsford was housing minister under the first Blair government.

Rishi Sunak has just appointed the sixth housing minister in a year.

You do know they are owned by the Chinese group Jingye. China - the very same country that dumps its steel on to the world market that kills off most of the competition.

Uk produces about 13 million tonnes of steel a year - China makes 800 million tonnes per year. It wouldnt be a good look for any UK Govt to be bailing out a Chinese company - do you agree ?
