  • Rishi pensioner giveaway

The latest magic money tree giveaway from Sunak looks like a massive change to the way income tax is defined to me.

If you take a working person and a retired person with the same income, they will pay a different overall rate of income tax. This is being introduced under the guise of fairness but as it isn't means tested to target support on pensioners who are actually struggling, it is essentially a giveaway to the wealthiest age group in society.

It doesn't amount to much at the moment but it potentially normalises further creeping changes in the future.

The tax system is complicated enough without more differences. I guess it's to appease those who didn't benefit from the recent reductions in NI.
A simple across the board rise in the personal allowance would have sufficed.

The working population do not have a majority that votes Tory though - that said, I’m not sure pensioners do either these days.

This and the "National Service" ruse come across as a desperate rabble playing the Graveyard card knowingly heading inexorably to extinction. The next incarnation of the Tory party will be so out of date it will be unlikely to win in Tunbridge Wells!!!

Iain Dale the LBC presenter will hope you are wrong about Tunbridge Wells.

He has today left LBC to to try to be the Tory candidate for the seat apparently.

According to Newsnight it is only restoring the situation to what it was with pensioners tax allowances a few years ago, so not such a massive change!

Older people continuing to be an anchor around the necks of younger workers.

The financials I'm not bothered about, but their decision making constantly voting to make literally everything worse for everyone apart from themselves. The brexit brigade are ecstatic at the thought of national service for 18 year olds.

This is another example of the incoherence of Sunak's campaign messaging.

For months now we have had Jeremy Hunt railing against the size of the unproductive economy. Yet here we are with a proposal reintroducing tax breaks that the Conservative government removed making it more likely that people will become or remain unproductive.

Its £2.5b a year cost and a further £1b for National Service supposedly funded by closing tax loopholes that a party 14 years in power has either introduced or allowed to persist.

Perhaps they are hoping these nuances will be lost on the over 60s they seem to be exclusively targetting to prop up their vote!

Pensioners had a different personal allowance to working age people a few years ago? I was not aware of that at all.
