So, when Labour introduced this, it wasn't a bung to get people to vote for them?

The point being Thatcher brought in housing benefit and incapacity benefit to deal with her closure of heavy industry .....instead of providing jobs

But 20 years later her party under Iain Duncan Smith cut back on one and changed the name of the other

So if its OK for the Tories to change its OK for Labour to row back too , especially as this makes economic sense

You’re taking crap , why didn’t labour scrap it then when they were in power under Blair and brown ?

Why are labour pressing ahead with universal credit when it’s not that generous for non working people?

Because it was economically viable then you daft old sod

It's not now and hasn't been for about a decade ......and the Tories should have reduced the cost

But they didn't want to lose votes

But never mind they lost anyway so Labour are getting stuck into it and it will be unpopular and some will lose out and need support but that's the way it is

Not a big thing but it just always makes me chuckle how the whole cohort becomes 'strivers' as soon as they've retired.
And don't forget, kids are all lazy these days and also a lot of these hard working pensioners will have actually been those lazy public sector scroungers that the very same people talk about constantly.

Many people even on here are obsessed by the "hard working" lies. I've never ever met anyone who made real money through so called "hard work". It's a horrible, puerile expression designed to be used as a wedge issue to further the interests of the elect few.

Compare and contrast: 2022: Keir Starmer: “Labour has a fully costed plan to freeze energy bills.” 2024: Ofgem announce a 10% rise in energy bills this winter & the Labour government cut the winter fuel allowance for millions of pensioners. https://t.co/CKG0O0zxyM

Not so much deluded as easily influenced by any passing tweet in his stream.

Starmer made that comment at the height of the fuel crisis two years ago. Since then energy prices have tumbled, the main reason that inflation is close to Bank of England norms.

Obviously if you just gulp down any passing opinion like soup then I guess you get where TWGL1 is right now.

UK Gas rose to 100.77 GBp/thm on June 23, 2026, up 0.83% from the previous day. Over the past month, UK Gas's price has fallen 12.14%, but it is still 21.56% higher than a year ago, according to trading on a contract for difference (CFD) that tracks the benchmark market for this commodity. UK Natural Gas - values, historical data, forecasts and news - updated on June of 2026.

UK Electricity increased 10.84 GBP/MWh or 13.23% since the beginning of 2026, according to the latest spot benchmarks offered by sellers to buyers priced in megawatt hour (MWh). This page includes a chart with historical data for the United Kingdom Electricity Price.
