There's another American movie similar to Threads called "The Day After" from the early 80's which is well worth a watch. Its on Youtube.
The story goes that Ronald & Nancy Reagan saw this movie and it started the ball rolling in ending the cold war with the Russkies as it was so realistic and horrifying of what would be the outcome if a nuclear exchange were to happen.
