I took far more interest in this US election than I normally do, back in 2016, I thought of Trump as a joke and hadn't watched any of the build up until I watched one of his speeches and had to reluctantly admit that he knew how to hold a crowd, as well as make his point cogently - I was more impressed than I thought I'd be. By contrast, I've seen far more of him over the past few months and thought he was awful. He was murdered by Harris in the debate they had and his addresses have been overlong and rambling, but it seems that, just as it doesn't matter what he gets up to as far as about 45 per cent of the country is concerned, it doesn't matter what crap he comes out with in his speeches - he was so right with that I could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue quote and it wouldn't make any difference as far as my support goes.

I first got Sky TV back in 1990 to watch England's tour of the West Indies, but soon happened upon what was then called the WWF. For about a year I was fascinated by it and couldn't stop watching it. I can remember a few months after I got the Sky dish, the first Gulf War began and, within a week, one of WWF's pantomime villains had turned into an Iraqi sympathiser who got his come uppance when. he was humiliated by someone like Hulk Hogan in some much hyped showdown a few weeks later.

I've thought of those old wrestling shows I couldn't get enough of for a short while thirty years ago now and again while I've watched the coverage from America of the election in the last few months - it's all been a bit cartoonish and way too biased for me. I knew about Fox, but, to be honest, they're no more biased than CNN and as for the Podcasts I'd watched, it was hard to find any objectivity. There was one especially called Meidas Touch I think which churned out about five videos a day and you could guarantee that the first one of the day would begin with the words "it's been an absolutely terrible morning for the Donald Trump campaign" - it was ridiculous stuff and full of holes and/or lies. Liberals have a tendency to look down their noses at people and act all superior, but, from what i saw on mainstream media and on social media as far as election coverage was concerned, they were just as bad as the Republicans in many ways.

I put a thread on here months ago asking where was the best place to get some considered and not completely biased coverage of the election and was pointed towards The Rest is Politics USA which I always made a point of watching. I was always struck by Katty Kaye never seeming fully convinced by the Democratic campaign even when it was going well for them and that's one of the reasons why I was never fully confident of a Harris win.

Having had a bit more time to think about it now, I'd say you can't avoid a feeling that large swathes of America were not willing to accept a, black, woman President, but there's more to it than that - rightly or wrongly, the "downtrodden" think that the Biden Government did not do enough for them.

I think you're right about a few bumpy years, I can see Trumps protectionist policies making a dent on the UK economy.

Trump's win is no surprise - it has looked like that (bar a brief and shallow Harris surge a few months ago) all year.

Shit result though.

Time to turn off the TV and avoid the MAGA parties for a while - and the parties in St Petersburg and Tel Aviv!

I’ve been there 4 times in last 6 years and agree about Trumps popularity, does depend on where you go though. New York and California a lot more liberal of course, the rest is all guns and Dolly Parton
