  • Labour Deputy Leader Election

Is this going to show a consolidation of right-wing Labour under Starmer - or a push back from the centre-left, the left, the unions, and the majority of the membership who are pissed off with their leader and all who circle him!

Six runner and riders so far. Looks like Burgon and Owen have backed off.

Alison McGovern and Paula Barker latest to join contest, as well as Emily Thornberry, Lucy Powell and Bell Ribeiro-Addy

The Guardian reckons that is three from the right (Phillipson, Powell and McGovern), one from the centre (Thornberry) and two from the left (Ribeiro-Addy and Barker) although I don't go along with their definitions of left-right.

80 MP nominations needed to get through, and all done in a rush for Thursday when the hustings will be on Zoom not in person. Many very unhappy about the stitch up in plain sight going on!

Keir Starmer has been reported to the ICC for crimes against humanity by indigenous Chagos Islanders

Might be looking for a new leader soon !

Time for sensible people to ditch them and give Corbyn/Sultana support. I happen to be an eternal optimist and think the silver lining is that the newer generations will never again be so gullible as to believe Labour are left leaning.

          Phllipson, Powell, Thornbury?

Oh dear oh dear oh dear

I do not know enough about the others to comment but they can't be as bad as the three above

          Can they?

No need for luck, strip away toxic right wing propaganda and there's many more sensible people around than you'd wish for.

A progressive left of centre amalgamation of labour , liberal , greens , Independents would be fantastic

The problem with the opposition to the right is that its always been split

Now that reform has seriously weakened the the idiots who could all get together and defeat them both ....are too busy arguing

Its fecj8n pathetic ....starmer , hopeless , ed davey , hopeless , greens infighting , corbyn and sultana pipe dream

Think of the voting power of a progressive moderate party ?

I am not saying let's have a US type 2 party system .....but its clear the divisions in opposition parties to the rise of the right shows us that too many parties are scrambling for too few votes

I think unless starmer is ousted and either a progressive party is formed or election pacts are sorted out this country is going to be ruled by a right wing government the likes of which we have never seen

Corbyn and Sultanas pissing about is not the answer but will make a lot of middle class worriers feel better ....until the election results

If Corbyns party turn into a realistic force with predictions of toppling farage ....that would mean upwards of 25 percent in the polls then any person who is extremely concerned about a right wing farage government would be EXTREMELY SENSIBLE to vote for them

If the admittedly utterly crap labour government likewise showed it had the only realistic chance of beating farage it would be INSANE not to vote for them

                      The perfect candidate

He won't make a song or dance about it, just get on with the job. :hehe:

The finance minister danced as he reflected on his grandmother celebrating the introduction of the pension.

In terms of the Labour Deputy Leadership probably someone like Bridget Phillipson, who retains the qualities of Rayner without the problems she created.

In terms of a more general approach. Not someone who is an idealogue, would seriously rattle the markets, has no real solutions beyond slogans, creates fear for some communities and has the economic sense of a toad.

Corbyn is a great MP, and a principled enough person but he is no leader of the UK. He's far-left and it doesn't work. Where has it worked before? Yesterday he was on the picket line re. the tube strike. That's what he offers. No solutions.

Totally different parties. Just off the top of my head, The Greens and Labours economic policy, approach to house building and immigration are miles apart.

We talked about this before. The last German Government was a coalition of the German equivalent of the parties mentioned. They were annihilated in the 2025 election

Are you talking about Farage or Corbyn in your second paragraph? The toad reference makes me think the former and the markets reference makes me think the latter, although Farage thought Kwarteng’s budget which frightened the markets was very good of course.

You haven’t answered my question, who should “sensible” people vote for? Is it sensible to vote for the two main parties that both look to be pretty clapped out at the moment?

Most (but not all) of the accusations thrown at Corbyn do apply to Farage too, and vice versa. They are populists. Both Reform and any new Left party would need to dramatically improve people's confidence in terms of their economic competence and what they will offer over and above key buzzwords and red meat issues. Because Farage gets the issue of very high immigration I would say he is closer to being sensible than Corbyn though.

But it is tough isn't it. What would be good is too mainstream parties that have the guts to tackle these issues and deliver. Tories let us all down, although personally I think the direction of travel under Sunak was better than Starmer. I am still hopeful though. It's a pretty big year coming.

I don't think the answer is a radical party of the left though. I just don't think they get, or have solutions for, the key issues at stake. So a more sensible option would be almost any other party in my opinion.

I'm more interested in Welsh issues at the moment and I really want to see a change there. We've had Labour in power way too long for their or our benefit.
