What a weird thread this is, but against my better judgement I'll weigh in...

I've spent a lot of time during the last week or so in pubs and clubs due to various music and comedy gigs, and it set me thinking. I genuinely can't remember the last time I saw violence of any kind while I've been in a pub or at a gig. In my experience, trouble in such places seems to be very rare these days. But when I began going to pubs and clubs in the early-Eighties, violence of one sort or another was very frequent, and some of it was pretty grim. You'd witness trouble pretty much weekly depending on how often you went out.

By the same token, violence at the football is extremely rare these days, whereas it used to be a very regular occurrence.

As a rule, I feel a lot safer wherever I go these days by comparison to how I felt in the Eighties and Nineties. Back then, there were pubs and clubs you'd automatically avoid if possible, and going to gigs in Cardiff or places like Newport, Swansea and Bristol was often a nervous experience, but none of that is true now. I haven't felt unsafe anywhere for many years.

As regards travelling on public transport, I don't believe it's any less safe now than it was while we were younger. Getting the bus home after an evening in the city centre often used to be a bit of a worry when I was a youngster, but I don't see many problems these days. There's always a danger you will encounter the occasional lunatic, but for the most part people seem to behave themselves.

Having said all of the above, me and Tracey were attacked in her car by a pair of tossers on eBikes last month while coming home from a gig, and during the same week I was involved in the incident on Queen Street you may have read about on my FB page with the guy screaming racist abuse at a young girl in the middle of the afternoon. I've never experienced things like that before.

Is the UK becoming more lawless of late? On balance, I don't think so.

So it should, we now have cctv everywhere, particularly in Cardiff city centre it seems. Furthermore, everybody seems to have ring doorbells or cameras on their houses. Think knife crime is still on the rise isn’t it? Murders high in 2022, uk seems to average between 600-700.

I started going into town in about 87/88 and after about midnight it seemed lawless with police bombing from place to place. I recall coming out of some gig on Charles street once and about 150 (mainly football lads) were brawling away, apparently Ely v Llanrumney. If you ever ventured down the south end of st Mary street there would be at least 100 Docks lads milling about around Lloyds or Chicago’s which were both dodgy as. You had to have your whitts about you or know some of them. It wasn’t too difficult to avoid back then mind as it was visually obvious. Nowadays I don’t think it’s so obvious where trouble can flare up and I’m sure the cctv helps somewhat whereas there was hardly any back in the 80’s. God knows what it was like in the 70’s?

That's comical. I like the way the author refers to 'crime drop deniers'. For the purpose of accuracy please add 'reported' before 'crime'. Some good articles on their website about diversity and inclusion as well...

Genuine question, not being sarky. I wasn’t alive 30 years ago so I can’t say what it was like, but I definitely don’t feel safer now than I did 10 years ago.

Police numbers have been slashed, seeing officers on the beat is pretty much non existent these days so petty crimes on the street (I would assume) are easier to get away with.

I also know people who simply don’t bother reporting things like phone snatchings, bike thefts, sheds broken into, etc because 99 times out of 100 the police do nothing.

Things like shoplifting or drug use might as well be decriminalised with how blatant and bold people are about it.

The old B52 armour/selection bias example springs to mind.

There is a whole science around it. The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) is used to monitor non-reported crime. They ask a sample of the population if they have experienced any crime in the last 12 months and then extrapolate it out. Results have also shown a general reduction in violent crime overtime, but a steady growth in fraud and computer based crime :

As long as I can remember there have been accusations that crime figures are manipulated. If you believe that though, you must also believe there was some golden time in the past where that wasn't happening (and I know which side of that fence I sit on)

I’m starting to think that you and Sludge are both having trouble grasping a few things on here.Who has said they don’t believe the statistics that Delmbox posted?
I merely asked him what his opinion was about them.
TLG and a few others have spoken about how they feel, and have added some real life experiences to back up their opinions.
We are allowed to question things on here.
For what it’s worth, I think most of those statistics are not far off, although shoplifting, theft, violence against shop workers, hospital staff, police and school teachers has risen by a considerable margin.
When you describe folk as hard of thinking and dizzy gits, you do come across as a bit of a tosser.

Yes I think there is a distinction - and it may be arguable whether non- reported crime is accurately modelled into the figures.

But that wasn’t the point of my post. I was just pointing to William that there was at least one poster (you) who doesn’t believe (or seemed to not believe) the figures. That was all. OK.
