I think the likelihood is she wanted to increase income tax to increase her headroom vs future OBR forecast and was internally blocked from doing so, her speech was setting that out and the press just ran and ran with it.

I think the OBR is probably at the end of its journey.
with all due respect Reeves did make out the hole was a lot larger than it was as soon as they got into power. here you go

Reeves said there was a black hole, but this included spending commitments made by Labour after they came to power.

Machieavellian, snidey and underhand are words that would be fitting.

Yeah I think that was an error and I've said so before on here, it framed every policy as if it was something they had to do rather than what was right or logical (like not handing benefits to millionaires via wfa).

Not sure the link you shared really proves it either way and it definitely tiptoes around it. The Tories deliberately left public sector pay in the long grass for the next government to deal with but had accepted the majority of their recommendations in previous years and so it seems likely they would have again (especially in the run up to a later election). You can of course be really generous and believe what they said post-election if you want because it is impossible to know for sure.

The main issue for the incoming government was Hunt's desperate death rattle cut to NI when the strength of the economy absolutely didn't warrant it.

This thread is about this year's budget though right? That's how I interpreted Goats post, that he was talking about this year. That is what I was asking for a quote for.
