    Re: Green Party win Gorton and Denton By Election

    Labour putting on a brave face hoping this gets forgotten about quickly, farage has gone full maga. The margin of victory makes anything other than 'didnt go well for us' just look pathetic and bitter. But my favourite delusional take of the whole episode..

    A spokesperson for the Conservatives - who finished fourth - say the result shows Keir Starmer has "killed the Labour Party".

    Oh I forgot Davey and the Lib Dems, what exactly is the point of them anymore?

    It's still only a by-election so you can't derive too much but I imagine internally a few more knives will be out in the other parties.

        This was the worst performance by the Tory Party in the history of by elections. They comfortably lost their deposit. Happy days

            Well, I did think the Greens would win, I thought Reform would come second and Labour third, but I must admit two things surprised me;

            1 - the scale of the Green victory
            2 - the absolute collapse of the Tory and Lib Dem (and others) vote

            The big story is what a victory it is for the Greens. I'm no fan of the direction Zack Polanski is taking them in, but I applaud their choice of candidate, she came across well, her victory speech was great and she does seem genuine. One word of caution is that they have now arrived and are legit opposition to the government and they will attract a lot more scrutiny (rightly so)

            Really poor night for Labour, but we expected it and in all honesty I thought it may have been worse. Huge headaches for Starmer, now having a flank on the left and right to defend.

            Reform did well in many respects, esp in a seat that would be well down their priority list (440th target seat apparently) but they will be disappointed. Their candidate is very smart but its no bad thing to see a local candidate win. Their "big signings" are no bad thing, but they would be wise to focus on grass root campaigns going forward. Two silver linings for Reform;

            1/the media scrutiny and focus may shift from them towards the Greens.

            2/ I think if Reform had won then a more co-ordinated tactical voting situation would have emerged for the May elections. May still happen, but less clearly so.

            Absolutely dreadful result for Tories and also Lib Dems - in another era this is precisely the kind of seat where they would have soaked up loads of protest votes .

            The far-right got stuffed (Advance UK, 0.4%) and the far-left (Communists 0.1%) so that's good.

            It is all more evidence that we are in a new era of a multi party democracy. The vote share of "the big two" is collapsing, in by-elections and council elections at least.

            I don't think anything will happen to Starmer before May, but they will do shit in May and this will only spark more conversations about what happens then.

              Matt Goodwin may well be "smart" but he's a racist with some of his views previously voiced.

              Also endorsed by Yaxley Lennon.

              Smart probably, racist waanker definitely.

                I thought the Greens were the "hard left"? It's difficult to keep up sometimes.

                    People will soon be able to set their clocks by the hourly updates when you say "far-right" and I say, "name some far-right policies" and then you go silent until 24 hours later you do the same!

                      In fairness, it genuinely is. I think the Greens can pivot more than most. How they campaign in leafy Herefordshire would be very different to how they did here of course.

                      Needless to say, it seems reasonable to call a communist party 'far left' though.

                            James, anything west of Reform is far left to you so fortunately you've given us a good belly laugh. Keep it up; it's refreshingly uplifting in these dark times.

                              Needless to say, I have never said that! Have we reached the stage here now where communism isn't far-left though? Wild!😵*💫
