Anyone else here still under a NHS dentist ? or most using private on here ?
NHS and 6 monthly check ups.

But it is not a service free at the point of use for most people - as it should be.

My NHS dentist also redirects patients to the private sector for more expensive treatments or procedures (not only the cosmetic stuff).

hardly touchy. For someone who purports to be a wordsmith you fail to see the literary device. Anyway I don't want to derail what is a good thread so here's the point written in simplified English. The student doctor/dentist has their training paid for by the taxpayer, and this is money the medical professional never has to repay.

Until it does, dental practices will offer a minimum service as they cant run operating at a loss
If it costs £250k to train a dentist they should have to give that back in equivalent services to the NHS, over the life of their career. I don't see that as being unreasonable.

Private here. Been with the practice for years. They don't offer NHS care though and its a bit of a bugbear for me, as they are a great practice and everyone should be able to benefit from them not just those with means.

You stated something that was ambiguous st least. Thanks for clarifying.

As for surgeries still offering NHS treatment, my surgery has imposed a scheme whereby a monthly payment is requested in return for different level of service e.g. I pay £12 a month and that covers an annual check-up and hygienist session.

Under this new arrangement I seem to be asked for a check up every year as opposed to every 6 months and the check up I had last month was £25 not £15(ish) or whatever I paid last time. Presumably any treatment needed is more expensive too.

And how on gods earth does it cost £250,000 to train s dentist?

I don't fully understand. Are you on a monthly subscription scheme such as I mentioned?
If so, are you having to pay extra for the check-ups and hygienist visits that are covered by that subscription?

its something like 4-5 years undergraduate course and then 2 years on the job training. That's say £30-40k per annum which has to cover the lectures, professors, training dentists, materials (and pharma isn't cheap),

                    Re: NHS Dental Services

found this regarding cost of training etc under government plan proposals from 2024 .

Consultation asks whether newly qualified dentists should commit to delivering a minimum amount of NHS work after graduating or repay some training fees.

Interesting - a limited proposal but going in the right direction.

Consultation started under Sunak - but gone nowhere since?

They have me an option, but I had an appointment pre-booked for about a week after the letter arrived, so I think I'll just leave it as it is, so I think it's a choice, pay for each appointment or subscribe.

                          Re: NHS Dental Services

Basically unless you are in a vulnerable group .....jacks , disabled ......you have to pay a monthly fee to join your dentists private list

An example say 20 quid a month .......you get 2 check ups and 2 scale and polish

Anything else .......you pay for ......at a rate a lot higher than the NHS standard fees

Thats the way it is .....thats the world of capitalism and private healthcare ......a very very threadbare service for the most vulnerable .......everyone else .....get your cash out

Wait till reform get hold of the NHS ........

If you are paying 12 quid a month then you are part of the dentists private set up , not nhs

                            I pay 25 quid a month , 2 check ups , 2 hygenist sessions

                              Your options are

Stay as an NHS patient but the service is crap and you might not get the same dentist or travel

Be a pay as you go patient .......but like the phone tarrifs its more expensive for as needed work

Join a private dentist plan ......lets call it 20 quid a month for 2 check ups and 2 hygenist visits ......thats it ....fillings , bridges , root canal work......get the cheque book out

Vote reform and that will be the whole of the NHS
