With the left hand we will give money to Russia to fund their war.

With the right hand we will give money to Ukraine to defend themselves against Russia.

I do have some sympathy, as we need to keep the lights on, but the stupid tossers don't think of that when it's about exploiting our own oil fields, so not sure they deserve much sympathy really.

You know it isn't sanctioned already right? They have temporarily delayed new sanctions that were due to come in. Why it wasn't already sanctioned? You will need to look back towards bojo, truss and sunak for answers.

New fields take years if not decades to get up and running so they are of absolutely no consequence in a discussion about the cost of living. The Tories and reform have pivoted to saying how much tax revenue it would generate, a fair bit, but potentially a drop in the ocean. Someone with more time than me could probably calculate direct taxation from the number of viable barrels, likely long term price of Brent crude (i.e. not the price now) overlayed with the current tax regime, obviously there's a bit more to it than that because there jobs and secondary industry but I don't think it really moves the needle.

The other side of the coin is that it doesn't help us with energy independence either, because it's sold on the open market so there is no 'ours' once the licenses are issued.

The oil fields aside, I just don't get all this 'stand up to Putin' rhetoric. He's 1500 miles away and has moved less than a 100 miles closer in nearly 5 years.

You’ve answered your own question there. The reason he’s only moved 100 miles closer in nearly 5 years, is because people have “stood up to him”.
