In the past 20/25 years the number of people being sent to prison in the UK and the length of their sentences, have increased massively. For both measures up by more than 50%. In some cases much more.

That has mostly been down to an angry and frustrated public and weak politicians who have no other solutions than to fill up the gaols (except for privatising them to foreign corporations who lobby for longer sentences!)

For some people prison is the only answer. But there are alternative approaches (maybe even ‘tough on the causes of crime’ for those into nostalgia) to increasing public safety and reducing criminal acts.

The examples of the USA and other countries are not ones we should follow. They have imprisoned more and more (especially the poor, blacks and latinos) for less and less and monetised the system to the benefit of the already rich.

Prisons remain colleges if crime with little attempt at rehabilitation or prevention of future offences. The buildings are often rotting, are understaffed, are filled with drone-delivered drugs and fail on most measures.

Sure, ‘lock em up and throw away the keys’ gives a temporary warm glow to the angry public. I have felt that at times too (I did after my 11th burglary) but it is no real answer. It is a failure.

The Labour government decision to release some people early was not part of a strategic rethink. It was a necessary and pragmatic way of averting a crisis. But it has become clearer over the past two years that no party is offering an alternative to failure. At best there are a few piecemeal ideas that may make things marginally better.

And there is a two tier policing and justice system - just not the inverted version that Farage is bleating about.

Sludge. You’ve had your say on this topic. Others may agree with you, others may have a different opinion or angle on it. You really do tend to infest threads in the worse possible way.
For once, why not step back, and give it a break.

I must admit Tuerty, i am taking to your new attitude and style of posting on here. Not taking anything too seriously and adding a bit of dark humour. It’s a winner imo.

Whats your response to a considered reply regarding prison sentences ?

At the end of the day people like you pontificate about good old law and order and responsibility but here we have violent thugs on serious charges who need to be sent down and you are complaining

Absolute nonsense Sonny. Of course violent thugs should be sent down. I’m just asking if there is anymore room in the jails for them.

Great idea. LetÂ’s just let every small time criminal do what they want, and just write them a strongly worded letter. No need to jail any of them then. YouÂ’d make an ideal modern day politician.

Let's bring back public stocks and bring back some community participation in allowing the public to randomly kick and cuff miscreants who are caught breaking the law like ASB, shop lifting, being late with the Ocado delivery.

If there's any Reform policy advisors reading this I demand some credit please.

You make it sound like shop lifting is minor.
It might be for the bigger chains, but your average small shop owner can lose a days profit in one swoop.

I agree with you Billy.

Never understand the knobhead who takes four cans from the local shop when you could stroll into Tesco and walk out with a crate.

I'm not trivialising shoplifting either as it is a massive problem for small and independent shop owners.

I don't think there's too many real deterrents for shoplifting? I'd say there's an actual disregard by some towards the victims of shoplifting and it's always been seen by some as 'fair game'.

Anecdotal tale to tell but once did a few stints of Community Service, the amount of shoplifters on the shifts were aplenty. All basically felt they wouldn't
receive a custodial sentence and that was nearly 30 years ago.

As I'm on a policy roll, how about the cat o' nine tails for shoplifting from a small trader?

Isn't the purpose of prison rehabilitation rather than punishment? And why can't those who are not deemed a flight risk or dangerous be allowed to work on the outside picking up litter, cleaning graffiti, and so on. Many would prefer working outdoors than being inside all day.
