  • Ukraine situation

given the prime minister's current embattled position it might be a little surprising that we haven't heard any sabre rattling from the conservatives over Ukraine and Russian aggression.

it is usually a sure fire way to get s boost in the polls.

there hasn't been much of a response at all though I wonder if the public now has a more nuanced response to wars, and they are waiting to see how this plays out in the media to see how to respond, or perhaps the huge amount of Russian money that has found its way into the conservative party coffers is making the response a bit more complicated...

They seem to be keeping him well away from talk of Russia as he'd inevitably say something ridiculous and spark World War Three; distracting him with the Islamophobia row so he can appear to be a principled chap for ordering an internal inquiry.

Meanwhile, Downing Street are painting him as the head of the anti-Russian alliance, if this Guardian article is to be believed:

          Re: Ukraine situation

Part of me says we should call Putin's bluff as he keeps saying that the reaction of NATO/The West is simply hysteria and he has no intention of invading Ukraine. So sit back and see.

On the other hand, of course, he may not be bluffing at all and will invade with the inevitable loss of life and for what? If the reason is to prevent Ukraine becoming part of the NATO alliance, surely that is crazy because if Ukraine becomes part of Russia then not only will Putin have NATO members Estonia and Latvia as next door neighbours but Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania as well!
