The Corporation which is equally despised by elements of the political right and left pissed me off last month with it's fawning and continuous coverage of the Queen's death, is one hundred years old today and I'd say that when you consider all of its output during that time, it's done a lot more good than harm. Not a fashionable view I'm sure and, like everything, the BBC is not perfect, but, taken overall, I'm still a fan.

Re: Happy centenary to the BBC.
Absolutely, done far more good than harm. It needs tweaks, it needs to represent all views etc, but it's probably better than any other national broadcaster and in theory at least is beholden to licence fee payers instead of advertisers or a government, and that can't be a bad thing.Originally posted by the other bob wilson View PostThe Corporation which is equally despised by elements of the political right and left pissed me off last month with it's fawning and continuous coverage of the Queen's death, is one hundred years old today and I'd say that when you consider all of its output during that time, it's done a lot more good than harm. Re: Happy centenary to the BBC.
Same here, Bob. I fired off a complaint regarding the obsequious and excessive coverage of the demise of both the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. However, Radio 4 is an absolute education. Just this morning and since the end of the news at 9am I have learned from it about diabetes, challenging medical advice, feminism in Hollywood, the history of banana plantations around the world, the development of IT in the Far East and a lot else.Originally posted by the other bob wilson View PostThe Corporation which is equally despised by elements of the political right and left pissed me off last month with it's fawning and continuous coverage of the Queen's death, is one hundred years old today and I'd say that when you consider all of its output during that time, it's done a lot more good than harm. 100 years of nannying the population with the "correct" narrative.Originally posted by Wales-Bales View Post100 years of leading edge half truths
TBG - I have radio4 on in the background all day. It's painfully woke. The days of adult debate are long gone with most output seeking to nanny. It's still the best out there unfortunately.
Bob Wilson - you seem struck with the same affliction as me. Superfluous use of comma. Like pringles, Once you pop you can't stop.

I don't like the word, but the BBC is undeniably 'woke' at the moment.Originally posted by HyperboreanCCFC View Post100 years of nannying the population with the "correct" narrative.

That said, it is the establishment, and wokeism (whatever it is) is the prevailing establishment doctrine at the moment for better or worse.
BBC is informative, but it's not really that challenging. Perhaps it never was?!

Guilty as charged. Managed to do that without a comma mind.Originally posted by HyperboreanCCFC View Post100 years of nannying the population with the "correct" narrative.

Re: Happy centenary to the BBC.
The BBC has always been the voice of the establishment - not quite 'the state' but the outlook and opinions of those in power.
It is conservative (small c) when it comes to its news and editorial line - where the voices of privilege, employers and finance are given far more space and prominence than the voices of the poor, trades unions or environmentalists. It's board and senior executive positions are disproportionately made up of conservatives (big and small c) and it fears to upset the government of the day and put its funding at risk.
But it also produces some of the world's best drama and documentary series. The stuff I watched from BBC4 during lockdown, that I had missed first time around - science, art, history, natural world doc series - was brilliant.
For every twisted Panorama hatchet job from John Ware there is an Attenborough masterclass.

Don't disagree with the thrust of this, although I would certainly say that environmentalists are onside with the BBC nowadays and part of the groups not to be criticisedOriginally posted by jon1959 View PostThe BBC has always been the voice of the establishment - not quite 'the state' but the outlook and opinions of those in power.

I'm too busy doing my housework and having switched to German rock radio. It's interesting that they use the word 'headbanging' when discussing the tracks being played.Originally posted by JamesWales View PostTell us about the history of banana plantations around the world.
