    Find them fascinating

In the North East Newcastle and Sunderland are different despite being very close and Middlesborough is different again

To me they are very similar and I couldn't tell the difference

Newport is very Caardiff until they hit words like down and town when they become almost west country

    Just 12 miles apart

They talk normal south wales Welsh in port talbot but get to Swansea and it all goes horribly wrong again

    Re: Accents

was an interesting time when i was working in the midlands

in some work places where there were fans from all 5 major midland clubs and Monday mornings used to be quite lively with banter !

but l learnt very quickly not to call someone from wolverhampton a brummie :hehe:

initially couldn't tell the difference in accent but got used to it after 5 years !

Wolverhampton , West Bromwich , Birmingham , Walsall .......can't tell the difference

Derby , Nottingham , Leicester......all seem very similar

Oxford is a strange one , not far from London but sound like wurzels

        Re: Accents

Barnsley and Sheffield are different accents and have some differences in dialect words. It was stark when I first moved here in the early 1980s (I worked on the buses for years with a citizen of Barnsley) but as time has passed the differences have faded. Barnsley has probably seen more population movement since the 80s than before (Sheffield always had a lot of people moving in and out) but the biggest influence I suspect is TV and social media. Just as regional accents got more national airtime, the distinctiveness of them began to reduce.

Despite having been to New Zealand I still get mixed up between a Kiwi and Aussie accent. Over there they can't understand my confusion, they say the difference is stark.

Do you know where a place called Wentworth Woodhouse is ?

I went for an interview to study geography at Sheffield polytechnic but the campus was out in the wilds

Lovely scenic place but I would have gone crazy

The Sydney accent is very harsh I think

                  I do - yes.

Big country mansion and garden centre with small village attached (great pub) just to the east of the M1. Fortune based on black gold (aka coal).
