From what I remember, Boland was a clogger, Bonner was a tidy passer of the ball. Neither would really fit the box to box description. Of the 3 centre midfielders we played at the time, kavanagh would be the closest to a 'box to box' player

Neither Bonner or Boland were box to box. Agree with you on Bonner, he was the better of the two. He sat in and tidied up, one of those players who was told to give the ball to the better players. Boland was just fit, he was in there to disrupt, close down, be physical etc. Box to Box players are generally gifted players, the clue is in the name, they can perform to a decent level in all areas of the pitch, takes a bit of doing, and they're the players who make those late runs into the box and come up with important goals.

You referred to them as box-to-box midfielders. Such players would be expected to score more than 5 goals in over 7 seasons worth of games.

Kav was a box to box player until he sat deeper in our promotion season and Jordon Mutch was box to box, Joe Ralls was as well in his earlier years with us. Rinomhota is probably the closest we’ve got to one now except that his goalscoring record is as bad as Boland and Bonney.
