  • Home and away

Much has been made of our relatively poor home form over the last few seasons, how the Cardiff City stadium has not been any sort of fortress. Should we fail to beat Huddersfield on Sunday, we'll once again have won more games away from home than at home this season.

Should that remain the case by Sunday afternoon, we'll have been the only league side in the top 4 divisions to have won more away games in a season than home for 3 successive seasons. If we manage to beat Huddersfield, we'll still be one of only 4 sides to have not won more home games than away in a season over the last 3 seasons (the others are Brighton, Lincoln and Wigan).

We're also currently one of only 12 sides to have scored more away from home in a season than at home in 2 of the last season. Only Wigan have scored more away in each of the last 3 seasons.

In total we have won a whopping 21 of our 68 home games over the last 3 seasons. Only Birmingham, Harrogate (both 20), AFC Wimbledon (16) and Rochdale (15) have won fewer from the bottom 3 divisions. Only Brighton and Southampton in the PL have worse win percentages than City and the other 4 sides listed above.

Only 7 other sides have a worse scoring record at home over the last 3 seasons, namely Gillingham, Birmingham City, Wolves, Preston, Walsall, Palace and Hull.

Home advantage slowly disappearing, the fact the European competitions have removed the home (dis)advantage of away goals shows. Straight up tactics, counter, soak pressure etc or Psychology...if i hear Dia Hunt one more time screaming i'll kill myself, when's the next away game...

Home advantage has pretty much returned to the levels it was at before lockdown, where with no crowds, it dipped quite a bit.

Such a flat atmosphere the away teams must love coming here, their fans do these days probably as they rarely did in the bad old days of crazy ninian park!

I'm surprised there are that many teams with a more pathetic home record than us over the past three seasons - some of the sides you mention do have the partial excuse that there's a relegation season, or two, in their figures I suppose.

Even if we are equally awful at home next season, you can guarantee there will be victorious opposition managers telling the media post match what a tough place to come to Cardiff City Stadium is :hehe:

Unless my memory has been completely numbed by this seasons home games and I’ve missed something. Have we ever had a season where our 4 best goals tally in games have all been away from home? We haven’t scored more than 2 at home (not including Villa friendly), but have scored 3 at Boro, Wigan, Watford and Blackpool.

I miss NP and have always found the CCS pretty soulless. This is a depressing stat that needs fixing.

                      Interesting question.

Yes, it has happened once before. In 1985/86, under Alan Durban we scored 4 at Notts County, Lincoln, Chesterfield and Plymouth. We won 3 of those, drawing 4-4 at Plymouth. Our best tally at home was 3, achieved only once against Wigan.

There are several seasons where our highest scoring game has been away from home, but as one-offs, I've discounted them.

It might be of note as well that our largest win this season has been by 2 goals. That has only happened on 6 other occasions - our two Premier League seasons, 1974/75, 1980/81, 1981/82 and 2014/15. Never before have 4 of our 5 biggest wins of the season been away from home. In fact, apart from those seasons where our biggest win was away from home, in seasons where our biggest win has happened more than once, never before has there been a season where we've had more biggest wins away from home.
