  • Games on Coronation Day

Does anyone else think it's a bit odd that there are football games being played on the day of the Coronation? Okay, I know a lot of people don't care one way or the other about the monarchy, but it still seems a bit strange to me. The date wasn't a bank holiday until it was announced as the day of the coronation, so the Football League must have deliberately chosen that day, instead of Saturday 6th. Why would they do that?

I also know the the King said he was happy for scheduled sporting events to go ahead as planned, but these EFL fixtures must have been added afterwards? Whether you're a fan of the King or not, a coronation is something that doesn't happen very often, and I think a lot of people will want to watch it. Scheduling a Football League programme at the same time seems a bit strange.

They didn't have to schedule the coronation during the football season. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.

The coronation is on the Saturday, not the Monday. Also the games weren't scheduled for the Monday originally because at that point the queen hadn't snuffed it and it was still a regular Monday.

Don't worry, we'll be getting another one soon enough I'm sure.

Would have made sense to skip Charles.

Five Premier League games, and a full set of fixtures in Scotland. That's it.

The bloke has been appointed by God himself and you want to skip him? Risky move.

Fair point. Let’s skip God too, just to be on the safe side.

Come on now aren’t you going to swear allegiance to our king?

Apparently if anyone gets a penalty during the period of the Coronation the taker must first be anointed with linement and then take it behind a specially erected screen. Think I have got that right!

If you want to watch the performance of one bloke putting a hat on another bloke's head and also watch the football then one or the other will be on catch up TV just like everything else these days. No sweat, thank goodness for choice I say.

You're right, of course. Not sure where I got the idea that the Coronation was on the Monday from, but that was my schoolboy error - it's taking place on the Saturday. Weirdly, you were the only one who noticed the flaw in my argument....
