  • New managers timeline

Excluding temporary appointments, I make it that our next manager will be our 45th permanent manager to be appointed. Within that there are a few who have been appointed more than once, but I'm looking at appointments.

The first 25% of our managers served the position for a total of 54 years. The last 25% of our managers served for 18 years, somewhat boosted by Dave Jones's tenure lasting 6 seasons.

Terry Yorath stands at the midpoint of our managerial appointments. The first 50% of our managers lasted 84 years. The second 50% lasted 29 years.

Games managed by each 25% of managerial appointments:

    First 25% (McDougall to Swindin) - 2,029
    Second 25% (Scoular to May) - 1,509
    Third 25% (Yorath to Lawrence) - 562
    Last 25% (Jones to Lamouchi) - 893

I'd say that is pretty standard across the world now. Well expect Italy where 3 managers a season (5 in total, 2 doing 2 stints) is normal.

I remember a few years back when West Ham appointed Redknapp he was only their 8th manager. They must have had 30 since!

Yes, and I think managers accept that's how it is.

I've just looked at the 24 managers who finished the Championship season in 2019/20. 8 are currently out of work while 2 have other jobs at football clubs. Of the 14 left who are still managing; 6 are in their countries' top division or managing an international side, 4 are currently still in the Championship, while the other 4 are managing in the lower divisions.
