  • Playing sides midweek and on weekends quiz

Lord Worcester made an observation about Middlesbrough away always seemingly being during midweek. That's not so. But in researching this I thought some of you might like a little quiz. All answers since promotion to the Championship in 2003 and include all cup/playoff games.

    1. Which 6 sides have we played away most often in midweek since 2003?

    2. Which 7 sides have we played away on at least 3 occasions since 2003 have never happened during midweek?

    3. Which 3 sides have travelled to Cardiff most often in midweek since 2003?

    4. Which 3 sides that we've played at home on at least 5 occasions since 2003 have never played in Cardiff during midweek?

    5. Excluding sides we've only faced in the cup, which 4 teams have we played most often during midweek (home and away)?

    6. Excluding sides we've only faced in the cup, which 4 teams have we played most often at weekends (home and away)?

I'd be very surprised if we'd played Swansea on any day other than a Saturday or Sunday for quite a while.

We did once, just after they were promoted. Eddie Johnson played up front in a 1-0 defeat in the League cup. However, 94% of our games against them since 2003 have been on the weekend, more than any other club bar those we've only met in cups.

Would be good if the questions were alongside every reply, bit of a bugger scrolling back to match answers to the numbers........

Which 6 sides have we played away most often in midweek since 2003?

Stoke, Barnsley, Coventry, Peterborough, Brighton and Reading.

              2. Which 7 sides have we played away on at least 3 occasions since 2003 have never happened during midweek?

Crewe, Doncaster, Bolton, Scunthorpe, Newcastle (does a Friday night game count as midweek?), Chelsea and Portsmouth - think there may be an Eater Monday game or two in there.

                2. I've included Fridays as part of the weekend, they're usually a weekend fixture a day early,so

                .... (15), Newcastle (5), Doncaster (4), Crewe, Scunthorpe, Chelsea, .... (3)

I had Derby originally as an answer to number one, so I’ll try them, the other one I changed my mind about was Middlesbrough.

So, there’s a side we’ve played 15 times without a midweek fixture? Not Hull is it? Think I’ve got the other three team, Gillingham.

Yes, 15 times without going there during midweek. In fact, the last 18 visits have all been weekend trips, including one bank holiday Monday. The last midweek trip we did there was a Tuesday in 1972.

You’ve confused me now Eric, I make it we played Swindon, QPR, Sunderland, Wrexham, Forest, the wurzels and Bristol Rovers away in midweek in 1972, but out of the teams we’d have played fifteen times since 2003, I can remember us playing them away during that time.

Take 2 - the question was 7 sides we've played away at least 3 times since 2003 but never during midweek. The answer is one of the teams you mention. As I've already said, we've played them 18 times away from home and all of those 18 games have been on weekends, if you include one Bank Holiday Monday as part of an extended weekend.

Swindon we’ve played away midweek in various cup games, QPR we played away midweek last season, Sunderland I can remember us winning and drawing up there in midweek games within the last twenty years, we’ve not played up at Wrexham within the last twenty years. We won up at Forest in Warnock’s third game which was a night match, we beat the wurzels 6-0 and we’ve played at Bristol Rovers in midweek in the League Cup a few times - hang on, was that game at Forest on a Friday?

The Forest game was on a Saturday, 5.30 kickoff. Sat 22 Oct 2016.
