I'm not claiming this as accurate but I think there's some interest in this. It appears that Transfermarkt include loan signings, so a season like 2010/11 includes figures for Bellers and Rambo, which is a bit misleading. It's worth pointing out that it looks at the value of players for that season, not transfer fees etc.

It means we have the 7th cheapest squad in two decades. I think that is his point. I think he is trying to make the point that with this year's squad budget we are more like Home Bargains than Harrods.

It's Transfermarkt giving a whole squad valuation for every season for all players who played for us.

Not necessarily the cheapest, but one that is worth less than some sides over a decade ago, when players were worth less.

I think there are also some moments of interest. Malky's first side was not worth a great deal but made the playoffs and league cup final.

I quite agree. You can be a real Steptoe like Reading and go down because of it. You can also waste your time blowing a king's ransom on a useless viking called Andreas Cornelius who couldn't hit a cow's arse with a banjo.

Malky did well in the Championship. Speed, power, team spirit, sprinkle of journeymen, sprinkle of experienced stardust.

Throwing money at a problem sometimes makes things worse. How you use the money is important Bank for your buck. And building a team.

I once read "Soccereconomics’" which said spending on players’ wages is a better predictor of football clubs league position than net spending on transfers.

That's what we did under Dave Jones wasn't it? Go for low fee/free players but give them larger wages.

                  Sounds about right!

It's clear what we have to do now. Don't sign anyone, give all the current squad a raise and we win the league.
