IMO 30mph on that road is too low.

Without a central reservation I think 40 is too high.
There's so many traffic lights between Ely Bridge and Tesco, going any faster than 30, for any beneficial length of time, is almost pointless.

Agreed. I think that there's about 8 sets of lights if you include pedestrian crossings, up until the Flyover. It'sgenerally a very busy stretch of road with two very busy junctions, a school and a University as well as housing, some office space and a very busy Supermarket. 30 is the right call.
