  • Robbie Robertson Passes Legend

Some of the most beloved songs he wrote for The Band include The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Up On Ripple Creek and The Weight.

And in humble opinion his best song: https://youtu.be/RwaHzf00L50

Was playing that track, and the album it came off, all the time about thirty five years ago - one of the most atmospheric records I’ve ever heard.

Really sad to wake up to this news, but that’s a timeless track and will help to preserve his memory.

    RIP

That solo album always reminded me of Tom waits

Or maybe Tom waits reminded me of him

During the late 60s when hippy west coast rock was the popular musical form at the time, The Band were moving in a completely different direction. They took their inspiration from American rural traditions and folklore. Robbie Robertson wrote southern-timged country soul songs focusing on people, places and traditions associated with an older version of Americana.

I haven't come across a band with three great singers in it like this one. Rick Danko, Richard Manuel and Levon Helm
