I think he meant the vital point that means they qualify for the play offs as opposed to finishing one point short at the end of the season.

Surely you could see that he doesn't mean they have guaranteed it now?

Yes but can't you see that my point is that it's a fair way from home yet to be looking at where it all went right or wrong. There's 33 points to play for.

I would prefer "it could be the dropped two points that means that Barnsley finish seventh on goal difference."

Better still, in a few weeks time, "if Barnsley hadn't squandered a two goal lead against Cardiff, they would be in the playoffs instead of Mick McCarthy's barmy army"
