    There was a pit just further on from Treorchi called Abergorki, and the Abergorki name still exists in some business names.

      Built separately

I can only think it was some sort of error in allocating road names when they were built. The 'Crescent' is the main road from Pontcanna down to Cowbridge Rd East, and the 'Road' is in fact a crescent, off the main road, ie Wyndham Crescent. Surely they were meant to be the other way round ?
      I was told many moons ago - the reason is this , one was built before the other one. Crescent was built first - then they built the road that looks like a crescent - but it was too late - that became Wyndham road. As you say - they should be the other way around.

              I've recently moved away from Wyndham Road and the story I was told was that they were both built at the same time and the signs were put up the wrong way around!

                Exactly what my missus said when I asked her about it last night.

                  I always assumed that area of Canton was all built at the same time? Maybe I'm wrong, but the notion that it was simply a case of the wrong signs being put up sounds plausible to me.

                  As for Abergorki - although the spelling is slightly different, it seems Abergorky is still a district of Treorchy with this building a testimony to that

                  Located in the Rhondda Valley in the Abergorky district of Treorchy. This miner's welfare hall was built some time around 1910. By 1937 it was opew...

                  When we've got a train service up here, Abergorki industrial estate (that term makes it sound grander than it is!) can be seen from the train between Ynyswen and Treherbert stations - Treherbert being the last stop on the line.

                  There was also an Abergorki colliery;

                  Wonder if the Insole pub in Canton was named after the family mentioned in the article about the colliery?
