Plenty of people aren't that interested in mixing with random people with a variety of nonsensical views. Going out with friends is one thing, going out with random strangers is another.

There's a young couple [30's] across the road from me. Since COVID he and his wife both work from home. Tesco delivers their food etc, and the occasional Deliveroo for 'special occasions'. Mid morning he pops down the road and brings back two coffees. That's it. They barely go anywhere, and it's the same for a growing majority of young people. My wife and I are in our local twice a week with friends and it's the best therapy you can have.

Of course, but none of them are random people I've bumped into in a pub.

I do visit pubs from time to time, particularly if I'm watching City but I do go out with friends to pubs from time to time. I can't say I ever socialise with anyone bar the group of people I'm with, and they're all the same.

So you never have a chat with anyone bar your mates? Not at the bar, someone who’s sat on the next table etc. How did you meet your mates?

How did I meet my mates? Work and music mainly. Most of my mates I've known for years.

No, I don't usually give a shit about any strangers sitting on the table next to me. I'm too busy talking about stuff with friends that interests me. I'm not someone who takes too kindly to any stranger who wants to strike up some random conversation about something that doesn't interest me, either.

I know others who are like me as well. We're not all people who are happy to talk to anyone about anything.

                  Shut the pubs

Turn them into housing association flats or community centres

Those that still want to drink buy them cans and send em down the park

                    My mates in a band

He did a charity gig with his mates for the tsunami disaster

We all met in a pub near the venue which was one of those mega boozers with lots of function rooms and bars , great place

We are just having a few drinks before the band had to go on , wives , girlfriends , groupies like me , just chilling

Was chatting to my mate about bands etc , got up to go to the bar and this bloke notices my tool t shirt , he's pissed up but at the bar I was pleasant then went and sat back down

Next thing we know he's pulled up a chair and talking shite and making us all feel uncomfortable

So we all decided to do one when he went to the toilet

An hour later he turns up in the gig , making an absolute arse of himself and in the end he started threatening us so I grabbed hold of him took him to the bouncers and out he goes

The bouncers then have a go at me for not letting them deal with him ff sake

That's the thing in places like pubs where people are pissed , you be pleasant and nice to these idiots but there's always one drunken old bore ready to spoil the evening

Feckin hate pubs , don't mind them in the day for a bit of food out of the way of the boozers though

But ‘socially’ there is a place for people who are happy to talk to anyone about anything. Not everyone is so insular and ‘closed shop’. The pub is an important part of UK society, a great place to meet and chat. Loads of wonderful marriages, resulting in cracking kids, began in a random pub meeting.

                        And I haven't said otherwise.

It's similar to supermarket checkouts. Some love the interaction with someone scanning items. Some people find it very socially awkward. I can see both points of view. Some can't.

The social aspect is undoubtedly wonderful for you but hard to measure.
What strain is going to be put on when all the numbers of people currently dying from tobacco and drink related illnesses live instead to a ripe old age with the cost and facility use of all the transplants increases, when the numbers suffering dementia and parkinson's increase and the cost of treatments/ medicines goes through the roof?
Its a bit of a double edged sword, ans that's without the loss or revenue to the tax man who will have to find the money.

Yes, ban beer sales from shops but let the keep the wine and spirits
