I mentioned that unusual stat many moons ago on here. Probably my favourite although the three consecutive 2-1 away wins at Leeds in the FA Cup run it close.

I meant three 2-1 away wins in consecutive years

Also we did the double over them that season including winning 3-0 away in the final game, so in some way we are responsible for this stat.
Didn't they rest virtually their entire regular starting XI for that as well?

I've often wondered whether goal difference would be a better way of running a league than points for winning and drawing.

Didn’t Hull get promoted to the premier with a minus goal difference ?

Probably. They also went down to 10 men early on when Danny Ward was sent off.

I think it would make individual games, particularly early in the season pretty unsatisfying.

It's easier to stop the other team from scoring than scoring yourself, so defence will be more highly valued.

An example that comes to mind.

Say you're 1-0 down with 5 minutes left. In points for a win, going for the equaliser and earning a point far outweighs conceding a second and still being on 0 so it's worth it.

But with only goal difference, going from -1 to 0 is the same as going from -1 to -2. It's equally good/bad. There's not more to gain for trying to equalise than trying to not make your result worse.

Conversely though there's as much to play for in games where a team is comfortably winning - if you're 3-0 up there wouldn't be teams taking their foot off the gas as they could get 5 or 6 points, and the losing team could get points back as well

I think it would promote attacking play

No, the worst GD they had was +9 in their last 3 promotion seasons.

In 2007/08 they went up through the playoffs with a +18 GD. Bristol City had challenged for much of that season with a negative goal difference, reversed on the final day of the season with a 3-0 win to give them a GD of +1.

As we proved in 2009, every goal counts.

Ah, didn’t notice the Peterborough promotion year you quoted, I’m stuck in the sixties. I though the goal total was low, they scored 134 in Terry’s season.

                            Aha, I was wondering. Thanks.

I've just noticed that they scored 690 goals over the course of 5 championship winning seasons in the Midland league before being elected to the Fourth Division. After promotion, they scored 200 goals over two seasons in the Third division. That's 1024 league goals in 8 seasons. That must take some beating.

Ridiculous rate of scoring wasn’t it?

Extraordinary. Wolves have the record for scoring the most goals over 8 successive seasons in league matches, when they scored 790 between 1953-61. That's 234 goals fewer than Peterborough managed.
