8,000 away fans there. Bout a 300 mile round trip on a cold Tuesday evening against a lower league club.
Got to hand it to the Geordies. They do travel .

      Newcastle , Sunderland

      Football cities

      Absolutely obsessed with their club

And it's all from up there, not like the plastic scousers and mancs from Surrey

I suspect if Newcastle had won the vast amount of trophies that Manchester United and Liverpool have done, they'd have the exact same sort of fanbase.

They would have an even bigger fanbase than they already have, obviously

They are starved of success and still take thousands away

True, but United have had average attendances over 50k and Liverpool over 40k as far back as the 1940s... I'm not sure the 'glory hunter' trend was really a thing then. So with or without glory hunters they'd have a huge following. So your initial point is a bit irrelevant.

The fact that Newcastle and Sunderland have had scant success compared to Liverpool and Man U makes their attendances more impressive, wouldn’t you say ?

Or perhaps relfects on others things like the lack of other things to do, the need to do at least 1 fun thing and the rivalry that exists between the cities way beyond football that has been handed down trough generations and football giving it a vent.

They had SOME attendances over 50 and 40 k

                      But so did Newcastle

They are an enormous football club given their relative lack of success and their geographical position

Is this the enormous football club that twice lost around 20% of its crowd after relegation to Division 2 in the 80s/90s? In fact, from 1976 to 1981 crowds halved as Newcastle went from 5th in the top division to bottom half in Div 2.

However their crowds since the early 90s have been phenomenal.

Keegan (twice) certainly had a hand in their crowd revival. Their crowds certainly dipped in the Keeganless years between his time as a player, then manager. 16,000 average in 90/91.

Well as you know crowds before italia 90 were poor

Our crowds in the late eighties and some of the 1990s were sometimes around 2500

Newcastle even with crowds of 18000 absolutely dwarfed us

Their first Premier League season their average was 33,000 and they sold out once. We were floundering then and can hardly be compared.
