  • Improving the playing squad

Now that the manager contract position finalisation is imminent (at last!) what are people`s expectations on how the squad can be improved.

There is clearly a need to improve the first team in a number of positions, to improve creativity and get in a really good Championship level striker but how can this be achieved in what will still be an environment of financial restrictions?

There was some discussion of this at last week`s Trust AGM and the topic of possible player sales to raise funds for team strengthening in key areas was raised and debated. The general view was that , if it improved the team as a whole, one or two sales would not be greatly objected to. The main player discussed was Perry Ng who would generate a substantial fee that could be used towards bringing in a good striker where the need is far greater than the loss of a full back (no matter how well he has played for us for the last couple of seasons). Could Robinson and Adams also generate a reasonable fee when they haven`t contributed much last season and are unlikely to be first choice next season?

The club can already make substantial savings in the profit and loss account by the return of our 5 loan players to their parent clubs - the loan fees and wages ran to several £m . In my personal opinion 3 of those loans didn`t make a major impact for us and Nat Phillips would be very expensive (jury out on Grant?)
If we lose Grant and Bowler then the rumour of targeting a quality new winger makes sense. We also need a quality creative midfielder even if Aaron Ramsey regains his fitness to play a lot more than he has.

What would you call a substantial fee for Ng.?

I think wed be lucky to get 3m.

Adams fee is going to be small around 250k?

Robinson I really cant see us getting 1m.

Unless a bid for Ng is silly money id reject any offer. Wed need to get a quality replacement as well. Romeo is nowhere near good enough. I honestly think losing Ng would be a huge loss.

I think any chance of a decent season rests on our younger players the Colwills , Davies , King proving good enough.

I just hope we sign young players with a potential sell on value.

      5-6 m for Ng

      1m for Adams
      1 for Robinson

no point in selling them for less

If we got 1m for Adams that would be right up there with the Steve Maclean deal.

I'd say the same for £5-6m for NG.

I could see a promoted Derby team that loves him, paying that to get him back.

I could also see us selling Ng for decent money (4m+) and then spending it on a striker that scores three goals in forty-six games.

              Re: Improving the playing squad

I watched a podcast on You Tube last night in which it was said Sunderland were asking for £20 million plus for Jobe Bellingham, Norwich £ 6 million for Adam Idah and Huddersfield £10 million plus for Jack Rudoni - I’d say that we were under valuing Ng if these values represent anything like reality in the market and we’d accept £5 million for him.

By the same token, the prices claimed for Idah (who wouldn’t get me very excited if we signed him) and Rudoni (who scored five goals last season) show that, short of finding an absolute bargain on the continent or finding a brilliant loan signing from the Premier League, we’re going to have to pay something around a club record fee to get in someone in their prime who could be expected to get us fifteen plus Championship goals in a season - in such circumstances, maybe Keiffer Moore becomes an attractive option again, but he’s not getting any younger.

Just to say, one other move at the other end of scale mentioned on that podcast was Sorba Thomas being available for £750,000.

                  Re: Improving the playing squad

I think some valuations are optimistic due to the ages of theses players, NG 3/4m max, Adams easily 500k but we might be able to push it as Derby seem very keen. Robinson I feel like he’s one of those players (like Grant at WBA) who is being over paid and we would be lucky to get any fee for him, lucky to even get him off the books.

Bulut mentioned Wintle for obtaining a fee, I can’t see it but if he can be moved on all the better.

Derby are now owned by a local businessman and they won't be splashing the cash on any player. I think we'd be very lucky to get 350k for him from Derby.

the entire squad will improve when we get a actual manager/coach who tries to work to the players strengths rather than force mold them into his own turtle style dinosaur tactics.

Good idea. He can warm the bench and leave on a free when his contract expires.
