  • Rip Willie Carlin

Our former player has died at the age of 83.

Was part of the legendary Brian Clough side which won promotion to the then first division

Frank O'Farrell brought him here to save us from relegation which we did in the last game of the season against Palace.

I particularly remember he inspired us to a win against Jack Charlton's Middleborough who I think won Division 2 at a canter that year.

We were I think 3 goals up in the first half, Carlin scoring his only goal for us with a diving near post header. I think we held on to win 3-2

    Rest in peace Willie

      Re: Rip Willie Carlin

I’m sure I mentioned this before on here, but my first memory of Willie Carlin was of him playing for Carlisle at Ninian Park some time in the late sixties. He seemed to spend the whole game in the referee’s ear arguing about anything and everything - I hated him and, somehow, the fact he was only five foot two made things worse.

However, over the next few years, it became clear that if you wanted promotion to the First Division, having Willie Carlin in your team made that target more attainable - Sheffield United wanted him after their relegation, Derby signed him and went up as Champions, as did his next team, Leicester.

Carlin was not the player he had been when he signed for City. He was one of two signings made by Frank O’Farrell very quickly after his appointment, he came on a free transfer and John Farrington for a club record fee of £62,000, but I would say it was Carlin who played the bigger part in keeping us up.

      RIP

You weren't the only one who didn't like him.
"Rowley (his manager at Sheffield United) had been unimpressed with Carlin during his time in charge and believed he had "got one over" on Clough having described Carlin as "an over-aggressive and slow midfielder who couldn't keep his mouth shut".
