  • Kieron Evans - contract extension

Kieron Evans has signed a new contract with the bluebirds, putting pen-to-paper on a one-year deal, with the option included for a further year.

The 22-year-old joined the Academy at U8 level, going on to make his First Team debut on September 12th, 2021, coming in a 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest.

Evans has previously gained experience on loan at Linfield and Torquay United, before spending the second half of the 2023/24 campaign at Gateshead, where he won the FA Trophy.

Speaking to Cardiff City TV, Kieron said: "I'm buzzing. I've been working on it for a while now. I've been at the Club for 12 years now, so extending that for another year is perfect for me.

"Last season at Gateshead helped me a lot. I was really happy to get it over the line in January and I really kicked on.The main goal for me now is to do as well as I can in pre-season."

Hmmm. He’s 23 in December, last made a Championship appearance back in November 2021. Not sure what this says about things moving forward.

It says cheap squad player on **** all. If he does alright, nothing spectacular, he'll be sold off for a few hundred grand.

The retained list was finally published on 7 June - and included the 'contract offers' to Evans, Matthew Turner, Tom Davies, Cameron Antwi and Raheem Conte. Until then I was convinced Evans would be on his way out of the club.

I know we are light on wingers, but this contract offer was a surprise. Either the club have seen something special in his Gateshead performances, or it is a cheap squad filling move. Doesn't immediately shout 'Top 6, here we come!'

(How many of the other offers have been accepted? All but Tom Davies?)

          Don't think Antwi has yet.

Evans has a lot more talent than he has shown at 1st team level (yet). He played very well in preseason last year, he just proved to be a little lightweight in contact.

At the moment we have three right footed wingers (inside lefts); Ashford Evans and Isaak Davies and three left footed wingers; Tanner, Meite and O'Dowda. I can see Tanner and O'Dowda being used in the left back position and Rubin Colwill used as an inside-left.

It will be interesting to see, when/if we sign a winger, if it is a left or a right footer.
