  • ex City player Graham Daniels?

I heard ten minutes of Jason Mohammed’s breakfast programme on BBC radio 2 yesterday morning and he had some bloke on doing Pause for Thought who was an ex professional footballer mainly at Cambridge Utd but said he started at Cardiff. He said that one of his first games for Cambridge was against City circa 1983 and we stuffed them 5-0. JM said it must have been a while ago as we never give anyone a hiding these days!

Not a name I remember down the City but was just wondering if anyone else remembers him? Apparently he’s still on the board at Cambridge Utd but a lifelong bluebird.

That game with Cambridge was in 83/84, the season after we were promoted back to the Second Division under Len Ashurst and, although Cambridge were a poor team that finished adrift at the bottom of the table, it was definitely a shock to see us win 5-0 because we'd only scored six times in the past thirteen matches with us not managing to find the net in ten of them!

I remember the game pretty well becauae it was Wayne Matthews' first home league start and his mum was in charge of the typing pool at Companies House where I worked at the time. I watched the game on the Bob Bank as usual at that time and couldn't believe what I was seeing in the first half as we scored four times in twenty minutes through Roger Gibbins (2), an own goal by Cambridge captain Steve Fallon and Nigel Vaughan - Gordon Owen scored late in the second half to complete the scoring.

Graham Daniels is a name i'd forgotten about, but I can recall that he was with City. He never got into the first team though - according to Wikipedia, we offered him a full time contract (as did Bristol Rovers), but he opted to join.Cambridge.

His Wikipedia page is an interesting read, an impressive man.

    12/11/83 Cardiff City (4) 5 Cambridge United (0) 0

Dibble, Smith, Dwyer, Bennett, Bodin, Elsey, Tong (Townsend), Vaughan (29), Matthews, Gibbins (25, 44), Owen (85)

Webster, Donaldson, Fallon (og 30), Moyes, Murray, Christie, Finney, Pyle, Daniels, Smith, Goldsmith

    Att. 4,730

A few interesting names in the Cambridge team, David Moyes and a couple of players who went on to play for us in Deriick Christie and Martin Goldsmith.
